I have recently learned about gulp bait. Just wondering what experience anyone has had with it? Which one would be good for trout?

3" Gulp Minnows in "Smelt". Trout of all sizes will eat that.

Is there a specific technique to use with them?

1/16oz jig head
Cast and experiment with different twitching of the rod tip on the retrieve. Sometimes bringing them right in works, other time you might need to let it sink a bit. Just try to imitate an injured bait fish and keep it flickering. Works like a charm. [signature]

Along with what LOAH said, in slow water/ponds, I'll use the 2.5" and 3" minnows unweighted as a very small jerkbait on an ultralight rod. You have to work it very, very slow, but it works great. I keep smelt, black shad, rainbow, and a couple other patterns that I can't remember on hand almost all the time along with some of the 4" ones and 1/4 oz jigheads to match.
I've also had good luck texas-rigging them with small offset hooks when I can find them. The only complaint I have is that they're not very durable. If I'm fishing for more aggressive fish, I'll usually rig up powerbait minnows since they usually last more than 1 or 2 fish. They've become my go-to lure and have started to replace the myriad of tube jigs that have been my go-to lures for quite a few years. Matt [signature] |
