Utah Lake Ice

I went out to the pumphouse on sunday to check out the ice. It looked about 4 inches thick but soft. Has anybody gone ice fishing on Utah Lake yet? How thick is safe ice? I've heard 4 inches, but does that apply if the ice is soft?

The weather here in Utah Valley has gone from cold to warm to cold and back again. I would imagine that that amounts to some unstable and unpredictable ice. It may be solid and safe at once spot, but dangerously soft and potentially deadly in others. Just be careful if you decide to go out -- and don't go alone!!
