Headed to Flagstaff Tomorrow
#1
Going to check out Upper Lake Mary and Ashurst Lake. No real life on the AZ part of this site so if anyone has any tips please add them as I'll be checking if I get a message notification e-mail!

Hopefully I'll have some pictures of gigantor pike to post - a 26 pounder came out of Ashurst this past Saturday. Another interesting tidbit: an AZ non-resident license is about the same cost as a resident NV license in that you don't have to get a CO river enhancement stamp, trout stamp, 2nd rod stamp, it's a one stop shop.

Yep...the AZ non resident is a great deal. And I understand you can pick your start date if ordering online. Best AZ info I've found is on AZ fish and Game weekly report.

Heard an Anchovy under a bobber gets some of the bigger pike.

I fished Ashurst Lake last summer for the first time, very nice little lake. I went there targeting the trout based on some info I had received from some Az friends. I started out trolling some trout lures like Thomas Bouyant, Mepps, Panther Martin, little Rapala's, pretty much everything in the tackle box and got a cpl little Rainbows. Nothing near the 16"-24" fish info my friends gave me. So I abandoned the trout stuff and tied on big 12 AC and trolled that, got a ton of action from it, bad thing was it was the Osprey dive bombing it constantly. They were relentless, even when I sped up to draw it under the surface they were diving and picking it up and trying to fly away with it. I abandoned that technique and tried casting it for awhile, same result. couldn't run anything that ran deep at all cuz the max depth i graphed was 9 feet. Very shallow lake. Back to trout lures it was, put back on the gold Thomas Bouyant and trolled some more. Just when I was about to leave, my rod tip slammed back and I figured I must have snagged cuz it wasn't giving. Well after a couple tugs I realized it was a fish. I pulled in a 14 lb pike, it was was fun. he was perfectly lip hooked and my line stayed clear of the sharp teeth. Remember your net, i forgot mine and had to lip grip that pike with pliers to drag him my boat! Good luck!
