Are you a C&R or H&C fisherman?

[#800000]With all of the discussion pro & con on C&R on these and other boards, I'm curious as to the percentage of our members that fall into either camp. I am NOT looking for your reasons; I'm just curious - into which group do you place yourself? I'll go first and place myself in the H&C group - MOSTLY.[/#800000]

[#0000FF]All of the above.

Definitely keep fish for the table but I release a lot more than I keep.

I enjoy eating my catch and I am experienced in filleting, prepping and cooking it enough different ways that it doesn't get boring.

I suspect that the reason some folks don't keep more fish is because they...or someone in their family...has had a bad experience either with fish bones or with poorly handled and/or poorly cooked fish.

Amazing how many folks over the years that I have "converted" to liking fish by talking them into trying some that was properly handled and prepared.

Like some folks say about marriage. Nothing better than a good one and nothing worse than a bad one.

Somebody trying to make the mod job harder?

So H&C - you mean hook 'em and cook 'em?

Don't think it should have to be an exclusive one vs the other. Have to say it depends on so many factors, variety of fish, locations, size, regs....
Take a poll of bait-fishers vs fly-fishers, see where that goes. [blush] Berky's vs Combat boots...even. Add in stance on gun-rights.

Do you pee Blue or Red?
"What's your favorite color? Red - no - Blue. Aaaaah!"

Sorry- premonitions (and past experience) no way this won't get ugly.

And - let the flame wars begin. I have some bad-old gas, maybe I could burn some up to dispose of it.

What TD said.

I love fresh fish but cannot eat anywhere close to everything I catch. I release more than 95% of what I catch and still eat freshly caught fish once a week or more.

I only keep what I plan to eat within a few days of catching because there's always another trip upcoming.

I also tend to keep fish that I believe are beneficial to remove from the fishery due to population or other factors. Small Mouth at Deer Creek are a prime example. Finless Freddies almost anywhere are thrown in specifically to be removed.

Some things I always throw back unless I catch a personal best (trophy). All Cutts, Tigers, LMB (especially at DC) end up back in the lake.

Conversely, some fish I like to eat so much I keep most of my catch. Walleye, Perch, and Kokanee fall into that camp.

I'm 99% c&r, but not opposed to throwing some on the grill or on the wall now and then.

C&R everything, excepting maybe once a year.

I believe that being a well balanced, educated conservationist is the most important aspect of being a fisherman.

I am both a C&R and H&C fisherman. Like MasterDaad put it, I try and balance what I keep and release based upon the fishery and what I like to eat. Often I just avoid the locations where C&R is encouraged or primarily practiced.

I was watching a fishing show a couple months ago about these groups that develop and build bass lakes for private fishing clubs. The most important part of managing a private lake is harvesting the fish and keeping them! Keep enough big ones that the little ones will grow and keep enough little ones so the population doesn't explode and crash.

Balance is the key...

Like DuBob, I grew up in harder times. My family did not fish for sport; we fished for food. Period. It was the rare undersize fish that got thrown back.

I just got back from my annual four-day float on the Missouri, where it is 100% C&R - not by law but by guide rules. Most trout there aren't even lifted out of the water for photos, in fact.

But back here at home, I'm a hook and cook guy. I still release tiny fish - and have learned to also release big prime spawners. The prime eaters, though, go on ice. When I limit out (which is fairly rare) I quit fishing for that species on that day.

I'm not attempting to justify or rationalize either C&R or H&C. Just stating what I do. I'll spout no flames.

Depends on the fish.
Most Trout C & R
Crappie I keep

Most Bass C & R
Perch I keep when I find some big enough
Walleye I keep
So I'm ab out 50/50.

I do catch and release with bass. With trout, 4 fish is plenty to eat for me. If I have fish still in the freezer, then it's catch and release. I don't want them freezer burnt so I try to use them up before going fishing again. At Kolob, the limit is only 2 fish under 15 inches or over 22 inches. So anything inbetween I release of course. I guess I like quality over quantity.

Always catch and release unless for some reason I don't think the fish will make it. Getting a good picture and watching the fish swim away is almost as fun as catching it for me.

I enjoy the cooking and eating part of catching fish as much as the fishing part so I tend to target species and go to lakes that can tolerate the harvesting and maybe do it some good.

About half and half. I don't keep many bass though. I keep just a few trout to smoke about once a month. I keep a few walleye or perch to fry up when I can.

It really depends on the size and quantity of fish being caught. I love to pull native fish out of little creeks, but the effort to prep them to cook is just not worth it, you have to let the little ones grow up sometimes. If I can land a good number of filet-able fish I have no problem keeping a few to smoke.

I do love to take kids out and without fail they always want to keep and eat their first catch, which I readily encourage.

Wow, multiple answers for me. I enjoy eating fish almost as much as fishing and it has always been a fun goal of mine to convert as many people to eating fish as I can. From a young age I have strived to perfect the art of filleting, cooking, and even catching fish. My in laws and wife hated fish when I married her and now they all love it because of me. Numerous others have fallen prey to my fish preparation and now love all kinds of fish too.
So the short answer is that I'm DEFINITELY a hook em and cook em guy!
THAT BEING SAID...... If I kept even a 1/4 of what I caught I wouldn't be able to eat them all! I'm always fishing and very rarely skunked, so what I have resorted to is to fish for quality fish. It's like I'm at a fish market when I am looking at a fish just caught and deciding whether or not to reduce it to my possession. Big or small is not nearly as important as the heft, bulk, and overall condition of the fish.
Example of this would be the 20-30 brooder cutts that I have caught out of a couple of community ponds here around garden city that have been in the 16-22" range and I have yet to keep one, but I have kept several really fat 12-13" triploid rainbows to eat. The body condition is much better.
I rarely keep LMB because they taste somewhat mossy to me,but smallies are great to eat in my opinion. I'm the guy that gets his butt chewed by the fish huggers for keeping my legal limit of 32-36" lakers from bear lake during the spawn, but my family uses these things all year long after we bottle them and use them the same way as salmon or tuna.
Walleyes, perch and catfish (except the very largest catfish...usually) are fished for exclusively to eat and get consumed rapidly at my house.
I do freeze fish when they are seasonally abundant in vacuum bags and they are as fresh as the day I caught them.

Bottom line..... I'm a hook em and cook em guy, but still release, by far, most of what I catch and encourage keeping only what people will consume, fresh or frozen. I also 100% support those that don't like to keep fish as long as they do it for their own reasons and don't try to preach it for some higher moral reason. One of my best friends won't keep a fish because he hates eating anything that swims, but he is one of the best fishing buddies you could ask for!

Just enjoy the fish for any reason you please, that's why God put em here.

I was able to check 1,3,4.
But, I like fish...just don't cook it well, so if there was another category like:
H & C if someone else prepares it, that would have my check.[Smile]

Moderation however. I pretty sure everyone here catches way more than they think of keeping.

C&R 90% of the time.
I never keep big fish unless they are badly hooked.
I've been keeping a fair number of bass under 12 inches at locations where size is down. (Deer creek, mantua, jordanelle) Smallies are delicious. I love me some fish tacos.
