Montpelier Reservoir Free Fishing Day
#1
My brother in law and I took the kids up to Montpelier Reservoir on Saturday to expose them to the joys of fishing. We fished right off the dam about 50 feet from the stairs and we could not keep the fish off the line. It was a Chinese fire drill for the two adults, casting, releasing, tying new hooks etc etc but the kids had a blast, even in the cold and light rain. (The adults, somewhat less, but isn't it all about the kids?)

The reservoir had risen over a foot in the last 2 weeks since I had been up last. Very happy to report that we only landed one small perch all day. Last year this time it was all you could do to keep the perch off your line. Perhaps the focused effort to keep and kill the perch is paying off.

Just curious what causes the fish to have such a blue hue to their backs? Is it the feed from this reservoir or something from the stocking facility?

Thanks for posting your report, sounds like the kids had a blast, were you catching trout or kokanee?

Trout. I have yet to catch a kokanee from shore there. Usually have to take the float tube out in the channel to hit the kokes.

I've heard of a few people catching kokes from shore but I don't think it happens very often. Normally you would need to be very close to some deep water to catch them from shore. Do the trout get very big there?

Not really, the largest I have seen is the 15" range. It is just an easy place for the kids to go. I have pulled a few kokes out that were a bit larger than the trout.

My family and I are headed up there in two weeks for a reunion. I plan to take the pontoon boats to try some fishing. What lures and techniques work the best for truout? And what about the Kokes?
I won't be trolling for either fish, but I could drift and jig, fly fish, throw spinners and rapalas. Any suggestions?
