Silver Lake
#1
I am taking my scouts backpacking this weekend.

Anybody know if there is still snow? and what to use when fishing there? or if you know any flies that will work well.

Thanks for your help.

Try renegades, adams, elk hair caddis, flash back pheasant tails. Good luck.

My sons group was up there two weeks ago and had a great time but didn't mention any snow. All of the group hiked in to Silver lake but some of them hiked to the little lake above it Saturday morning before hiking back out to Silver lake flats. With the storms this week there could be snow again though.

If your talking about silver lake in a/f canyon the last time i was their it was no camping until your a mile up the trail and i believe it was contained fires only, but that was many years ago.

And also we would hike back down to the lake in the early morning and used #2 gold blue fox spinners where the stream goes into the lake, we caught some really pretty brookies and some decent bows 12- 14 " ive never fished the upper lake but I've heard its fast fishing but the fish are stunnted. Its a beutifull place so the kiddos will atleast enjoy the scenery, and ive never been skunked their!! With this recent storm their may be snow but if not im sure the ground will still be wet just something to keep in mind, good luck and post some pics!!

call the ranger station to find out the regulations on fire, and how far from the lake you need to be for camping.

Flies behind a bubble should do the trick.

You have to be a half a mile from Silver lake flats to have a fire.

I'm sorry I missed your post. Spent last weekend up there and let the kids catch all the planter bows they could pull in. Rigged using a slip weight above a sinker. The leader was roughly 18 inches with the smallest trebble hook possible and a ball of power bait in rainbow or yellow. The small trebble will float off the bottom about 18 inches and those bows hit it within a minute or two of the cast. I never got to dip a line, and the kids wore me out running back and forth landing fish, re-hooking, re-baiting, etc..

Have a great time.

Well the trip was a success! The boys had so much fun but backpacking up the hill killed me!! fishing was ok but all out fish were 5 inch to 10 in so they were all really small planter fish. We caught all our fish on flies. The weather was good none of our boys got cold, I was the only one that got cold because I put my hammock over a big stream and the wind mixed with the cold water I became really cold.

Thanks for all your help on this trip
