Birch Creek Reservoir - w/pics
#1
I fished Birch Creek Reservoir on Monday from my kick boat. The climb up the dam with your tube gets the old heart going first thing in the morning. The reservoir level is down about 20' - 25' from being full and there is a good flow of water going out for irrigation. I fished from 7:00 until 2:30 using fly tackle and caught nineteen fish, all healthy rainbows from 14" - 16" long. I used a size 8 egg sucking leech in Canada blood, size 6 bead head soft hackle patterns in black/green/pearl and tan/green/pearl. I used a fast sinking line in 18' - 28' of water. The water temperature was 66-68 degrees and the visibility in the water was about 8' - 9'. The best method was to cast 50' - 60' of line out, paddle for 15 - 30 seconds, and then strip the line back in. Most of the fish seemed to be near the bottom, although there were some fish coming to the top for damsels, mayflies, midges and some caddis. I did not hook a tiger trout on this visit. It was pretty good fishing for some scrappy above average sized bows.

Nice 'bows! I would much rather catch them than those tigers. Glad to see the rainbows taking hold.

Nice report. Crazy five six week ago it was full. Looks about twenty feet down. The farmers waste no time sucking that place down. That is one hell of a hike to pack over a kick boat. I packed a toon over, to be tossed a round like a leaf in the wind.

I fished BC on September 5th last year and the rainbows I caught were all 10" -12" long. They seem to be doing real well in there. They should be pushing 17" - 18" in the fall.[fishin]

That is a good hike over the dam but I just have a fish cat and use the backpack straps to carry it so it's not bad. I was lucky to have a day with very little wind and by the time it started to blow I was up to the top end so it was easy going coming back to the dam. I don't know how far they pull the water down before they shut it off but it is going down fast.[:/]

I couldn't tell you how Woodruff is. I haven't been there in over ten years. As I remember it, thats all there is in there are cutthroats. It used to be a Blue Ribbon fishery but was taken off the list a few years ago because the fish were struggling.[:/]
