4 of the last 7 days (Uintas)

In the last 7 days, I have spent 4 of them backpacking the High Uintas. Last weekend was Buck Pasture with TDT, so on Thursday and Friday my buddy and I hit Amethyst Basin.

As you can tell by this guy's stride, the pace was set on fast.


However as the miles tacked on, tiredness set in.


Every now and then we got a teaser view of what was waiting for us.


This meadow was a much needed rest stop.


But eventually we had to get back to work.


BR-24 would have been a beautiful place to stay, however the Boy Scouts and a recently deceased horse carcase stopped any plans of staying there.


Finally the days objective....Amethyst Lake.....was reached.






And the local Brook Trout population was out and about.











As the afternoon dragged on....it was time to get some on the fly!



The action was fast.....so I got a take on camera!



A Uinta Brookie on the fly is a beautiful thing.



One last view of the lake before we hiked back down to camp/fish the Amethyst Meadow.



The search for a campsite to our liking was daunghting......all the good ones were taken!



Once camp was established......



It was time to get into some Brookies near camp!



Brookies before bed! Life has been good this week!



The next morning we made the hike to Ostler Lake. And it was pretty.....SLOW.





So we headed back to the meadow.....


Where we were greated by fit and fiesty Brookies.









One last Brookie for the road.



The old dusty trail felt longer on the way down.



At the trailhead I got a shot of where we had traveled......too bad the smoke from the fires out of state washed out an otherwise beautiful view.

I can only look back at the day when I was able to pack in like that. Thank you for bringing back some fond memories for me.

My wife and I used to take a ten day backpack trip every summer. We would take a different drainage each year so we could see where we wanted to go back to when we got old. We're old now and it's motels and restaurants.[frown]

Nice work. I heard that some years Amethyst holds some bigger brook trout. Still looks like you caught some fun fish in a beautiful setting. Hats off!

Looks like fun, I love that area. It's so beautiful and the fish look good. Last time I was there the fish in Amethyst lake were all heads and no body. We're there many people up there? Love your photos as always. Thanks j

We lost count of how many people were up there. And that was on a Thursday/Friday.......we could only imagine how many were gonna camp there Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Everyone seemed to camp at Ostler Lake and BR-24......leaving us our choice of Amethyst Lake or the Amethyst Meadow. We ended up choosing the latter.

Its a beautiful area......no wonder its soo popular!

I first went to Amethyst Lake 41 years ago as a 12 year old scout. It has since been my favorite spot in the Uinta's. It used to be that no one would make that steep hike so you could have the place to your self. I continued to go to that Basin every year on foot or horseback until about 5 years ago. Knee's are shot know. I recognized the area of every photo you posted. Thanks for bring back those great memories.
