Any trout in Deer Creek or is it mostly walleye?
#1

Ooooops! I spelled Ant trout in Deer Creek instead of Any trout. Yikes! My post would have been made into a comedy sketch. Thank gosh you can edit your post.

I have a question: Any trout in good numbers in Deer Creek or am I wasting my time making a trip? Is it mostly walleye now? Is it way crowded with boats and skiers? Would it be a better idea to fish for walleye instead of trout?[fishon]

There are plenty of trout in Deer Creek but what made you think it was mostly walleye now? Deer Creek is like most lakes along the Was. Front, it is really busy on the weekends but not too bad during the week, especially if you get there early, say first light, most PWC and ski boats don't get there until noon or so, depending the day of the week.

[#0000FF]WHAAAAT?

When was the last time you tried to fish Deer Creek during the week during the summer? For several years there is virtually NO time you can get on the lake without being run over by the power squadron. Each year I try going out at daybreak and end up dodging skiers "running the bank" before 7 in the morning.

In answer to the OP...plenty of trout...very few walleyes. A few stray walleyes caught through the year but no real good catches by anybody. Trout can be caught shallow early but go deeper when the sun hits the water. Good to have good sonar and downriggers.

There are two areas of the lake that you can avoid the Power Squadron, Rainbow bay and Wallsburg bay. Other wise you have to doge the skiers and such on the main lake. Deer Creek is one of the most heavily stocked lakes along the Wasatch Front with trout. May not be very big, but there are tons of em in there !!!

Thanks for the reply tubedude.

I was wondering cause the walleye did rise in numbers back in the 90s.
Also there are still walleye being caught even by people fishing for smallmouth bass. I have seen the video proof of that. Thats what my intellectual curiosity was based on.

I'm getting a new pontoon this week and I have not fished in over 5 years. (sniff sniff tears are falling) I have made plans in the past but the wind is always blowing. I got rid of my inflatable boat I just don't trust inflatables anymore.

The pontoon I got was from ventureoutdoors in Utah. I bought it from Walmart. It is a non-inflatable craft! And you can put a bonus trolling motor on it too.

I'm personally tired of going to Willard and it is very very very very very crowded!

Based on what you said I may try someplace else. But we shall see. Perhaps I'll go to Cutler.[:/]

What about the dam? It looks like on Google satellite you can hike up past the dam.

I fish Deer Creek at least once a week as long as it has no ice on it -- mostly from my motorized tube.

There are lots of trout. The lake was heavily stocked early last year and those planters are now very decent sized.

But this time of year I target bass. The smallmouth are plentiful and fun to catch. Shoreline topwater, jerks or cranks early and Senkos later generally produce large numbers of 8-12" SMB's.

I have caught three Walleye this year targeting trout and bass. But I don't target Walleye at Deer Creek. They are not plentiful or big particularly compared to Utah Lake.

During the Summer I plan to be off the water by 9AM to avoid the power squadron even during the week. I will fish it in the evenings on occasion but then I limit myself to Walsburg bay.

If you want to head up sometime, shoot me a PM.

I think what I said was it wasn't too bad early in the morning. That does not mean there are no water skiers but there are usually less during the week and the first thing in the morning. I think I look at it a little different than you because I'm in a boat and what I consider bad is likely not the same as your opinion of bad.

[#0000FF]There is a difference in perspective. If you have a boat it is easier to move away from the idiots. But a lot of them single out small tin boats and float tubes for harassment. They have the whole lake and have to keep doing "fly bys" to show off their craft.

Last year I made a try to get out in early June. It was barely getting light and there was a deer swimming toward me across the lake. Wouldn't you know it, some doofus came roaring up and was turning donuts around that poor deer until it almost drowned. I wasn't close enough to do much about it. But I yelled a few times and the guy came zipping over to give me some stuff. I took a picture of his hull numbers and started talking on my walkie talkie. He boogied.

I have been fishing the shore at the Island and Rainbow bay and doing very well for SM and LM, I was there this last Saturday at 6am fishing my top water popper, caught a 6 inch sm and just as I got it to shore a nice LM in the 5lb range came up and got about 3/4 of it in its mouth. Did not get the popper though and it swam off.

I gave a couple of damns and continued on.
Skiers were on the water already.

(not really directed AT you TD - just grabbing a reply...)

OP: Funny, you may have changed YOUR title, but the replies picked up the "ants" - so they show in the mini preview. Thought you were talking about little finless freddies.

And you make it sound like lots of walleye would be a bad thing over the usual lake full of planter bows?

Here's one option to deal with the marauders of the sea! Always amazes me when the big boats can access the WHOLE lake, and a little craft is limited to where they can get to, but inevitably - like a moth to a flame - they are drawn in to har-ass. I just don't get why that's "fun" for them.

smallie population on DC is enormous - we've boated a ton of smallmouth the last couple trips out - they love the rocks. most of them are 8-12 inches but alot of fun to tangle with on light tackle.

Largemouths we've boated are usually out a bit deeper than the smallies and usually a bit bigger fish - but we have yet to see any monsters

some nice perch in there too , my buddy nailed a couple on sunday on plastics we were using for bass that were in the 11" range - very fat as well.

I read online by the Utah DWR that the Walleye population went up back in the 90s. also a friend of mine back in the day said that walleye have taken over the lake. I guess I took his word for it.....call me gullible.[:/]

I honestly would be disapointed if walleye took over Deer Creek, mainly cause I don't know how to fish for them.[:/]

Strictly opinion about the walleye in Deer Creek.[cool]

[#0000FF]I did stop by the main gate at Walsburg on the way out and showed the picture I took with the bow numbers. Left my name and number if I had to appear or testify. Never heard anything.

Over the years I have had a lot of guys heading right for me at high speed until I brought up the camera. I never knew so many boats could screech their tires while on the water.

The guy in the picture below was running in between me and the dike at Willard...while I was casting in to the rocks. As soon as he saw my camera he hauled back on the throttle and almost swamped his boat with the following wake. Then he had the nerve to ask if I was fishing there.

Funny, I was using my phone like it was a camera on the Gorge over the fourth. Just got the look like what is that guy doing. I wanted them to ask me so I could tell them I was recording it to turn them in for running not wake-less 50 ft from my boat. Nobody stopped.

[#0000FF]It ain't gonna work every time. You need for the perpetrator to have enough smarts to know that what they are doing is wrong. Unfortunately, a lot of them either don't know or don't care...or both.

I think some of those bozos would not even notice a cannon shot across their bow.

I take pictures all the time of guys who snuggle right up to my tube...even though there are no other craft on the lake. I take the picture and they respond. One guy asked "Is that supposed to scare me?" I said "Nope. I'm writing a book on %$#@&&s I have encountered while fishing. I think you might make the cover." I especially like the response "Quit whining. You don't own the lake."...as if THEY do.
