J'nelle sunday - snubber q??
#1
first trip out with the new downriggers - me and my buddy ended up going 2 for 4 trolling at Jordanelle on Sunday - ended up boating 2 decent rainbows ( in the mid teens, both released) and lost one a few feet from the net that looked much bigger - we only trolled for 2 hours but we had a blast doing it. boated a bunch of smallies in the morning casting plastics ( and a few perch) . biggest smallmouth was a notch over 14" ( my biggest in Utah to date) ...alot of really small fish were had tho -

I wanted to know what you guys think about using snubbers ... will they increase your catch rate? would they be used with both pop gear and dodgers ? or just certain rigs?

using 8,6" cabelas downrigger rods that are very flexible. just wondering if the snubbers might give me a leg up on the fish or are unnecessary .

- you can really get it dialed in with the downriggers - look forward to trolling up some more cold water fishies!

I only use snubbers in the Fall (mouths are really soft then) for kokanee and usually not even then. I use monofilament line only on my down rigger poles and don't horse them in. I did use snubbers but kept losing fish and I believe it was because of the snubbers.

I use the same exact rod you are using. I've tried snubbers for kokanee and I lost more fish than when I was not using snubbers, so I do not use them any longer. Also, I use a braided line (Spiderwire or equivalent) on my downrigger rods with about 6' of flourocarbon leader before my dodger. I then run my lure 12-36" behind the dodger on more flourocarbon leader depending on what the fish are wanting. The only place I've had good success using snubbers is "handlining" for walleye in the Detroit or St. Clair Rivers back in Michigan where my leader was only 18" long.

I have run snubbers in the past and don't anymore the main reason is the super soft kokanee rods that are available these day eliminate the need for them. and I use them for all my trolling needs with great success.

I used to use snubbers all the time until I found me a decent trolling pole. When I used them they only seemed to catch a few fish till they got too stretched out and started to break. They say it feels more natural to the fish when it bites your lure or bait. I know if I believe that.
