There are likely a few bigger crappie left in Pineview but the last few years the average crappie has declined in size, to where if you catch a 10"er you have a big one today. I think the average crappie is around 9 to 9.5"

I went fishing for them about a month ago and could not catch any decent sized ones, they were all small. Every once in awhile you will catch a nice one. Last year ice fishing you could catch some nice ones.

The boyfriend and I have been up three times since the middle of June and have had great success with numbers but size wasn't much to brag about. I will say however that our time up there this past Saturday produced much better quality. I wouldn't say the length was much (bigger than our past two trips) but they were much fatter. We did keep about 30 this trip to make some fettucini alfredo and crappie stir fry whereas our trips past we threw most everything back because there wasn't much meat to fillet, not so much the problem this time.

Would anyone be willing to give some advice to a guy on where and how to fish from the shore with a bunch of little kids? I would love to get them into some crappie, but I have to admit, unless it's trout, I'm at a bit of a loss. I have plenty of jigs, I just don't know where to go or how to do it from the shore. We won't have a boat either.

Welcome to the site UGH, wow, that took a long time to make your first post, since you joined.
As far as fishing from shore for anything other than trout, try using a small jig, like the ones you might use while ice fishing, under a bobber and tip it with a small piece of worm for the kids. You can throw some large lures or plastics and catch bass or maybe a tiger but if the fish are biting the kids might keep you busy taking fish off[ ![]() WH2 [signature]

Thanks for the advice. I appreciate it. I have to admit, I'm more of a reader than a talker. I am looking forward to getting up there tonight and trying it out with the kids. I will definately post up on how I do.

Might add to Wiper's suggestion - small jig, small bobber. Maybe even a slip bobber. They can strip your worm, and hardly a wiggle on a big bobber, plus with a slip setup - you can give a little tug, then let it drop. Crappie more than bluegill I think like to see a big of action.
Often use a curly tail grub and pitch a bobber, Give it say three tugs, move a short distance, then let it drop and sit a sec, then repeat. Sometimes that extra action gets their attention. Waxworms and mealworms can work even outside of ice- season. Tear a waxie in half so the juices can flow. Another good shore setup can be a drop shot. Get a barrel weight and a three was swivel. That way your jig or worm can sit up off the bottom, yet you can still detect a subtle bite. Worked on the perch at Newton last week. Probably better than my bobber, since I didn't have to take up the slack to get a hookset. Perch are pretty good at the hit-and-run method of keeping your hooks clean. Just pitching a couple pennies

All great advice guys. I appreciate it. I'm new to this crappie and perch thing.

Crappie were in 25ft range today and stacked like cordwood. they hit everything from jigs to 4" senkos, the action was as fast as you could get your lure down. Without a boat you are in for a long cast. and we did not catch any close to shore. sorry to disappoint.

When you say 25 foot range, is that 25 feet from shore or 25 feet deep water?

Well I figured I would give a report. I met one of the coolest law enforcement officers I have ever met before. So hats off to Weber County Sheriff department. You have a good one up there. He saw me with all the nieces and nephews and told me I was free to fish off the docks at Cemetary point. This was about 8:00 on Friday night, so most of the boating had ended for the day. Those that were still using the slips were very interested to see us catching fish and thought it was cool. The sheriff even commented that he was glad to see some kids using a fishing pole instead of video games. We didn't get into any crappie, but we did catch a bunch of bluegill. Nothing over 7-8" but they were hungry and the kids didn't care. They could have been 14" bluegill for all the kids cared. it was a ton of fun. Thanks for the advice guys. The kids would rather have fished than play in the boat or on the tubes. It was a success.
