alright guys i need help figuring out what's wrong with my cardinal spinning reel. basically every time that line is stripped out from the reel it doesn't come out smoothly and consistently no matter how much i play around with the drag. when i pull the line it seems to catch somewhere and causes momentary resistance, this happens on approximately every turn of the spool. its beginning to drive me insane, when a fish takes line it is no longer a smooth fluent motion instead its more of a stop and go. help!

[#0000FF]Sounds like you might have dunked it in the water and could have some dirt or water deposits in the drag washers. Or...it could just be getting old and in need of new drag washers. They harden over time, especially if you leave the drag tightened down when the reels are not in use.
Don't oil the drag washers. That will ruin the drag effect.

[#484848]Is your line spinning on the spool? If you are using one of the newer lines, tie a few wraps of mono on first to keep the line from slipping on the core of the spool. Many folks also tape it to the core to keep it from slipping.[/#484848]

[#0000FF]Not sure about any reel repair shops in Utah. Might try Fish Tech.
Otherwise, get the make and model of your reel and start looking online for a source. Just put "parts for Cardinal reels" in the search engine. HERE IS A LINK to one such site that came up.
Does your reel have the drag washers inside the reel spool or do they slide down the center shaft outside the spool?
You might also check with tlarson on this board. He recently bought out a reel repair operation and ended up with gazillions of spare parts.

Yes, nobody here in town service reels...I had to send mine out to Shimano to get it steamed and repacked with new grease...I remember Anglers Inn back in the day service reels but since they're gone, it kind of sucks nowhere in Utah does...

Tighten the drag down so that you can't pull line off at all and learn to back reel !! The technique is when you hook a fish, you take the anti reverse off and as the fish pulls, you back the reel handle up to give line, then take it back up. Drags are notoriously inefficient with lighter lines. They just don't have the ability to be fine tuned with 4,6,or 8 lb. line. Learn to back reel.

[#0000FF]I can't believe ANYBODY still fights fish by back reeling. Are you still using those stone reels? And surely you don't advocate that while trolling.
Good quality modern reels have super smooth drags that do not chatter and hang up. A lot harder for a newbie to learn how to back reel than to fight fish with a loose drag.
Leaving the anti-reverse off is inviting tangles...and worse.

I've seen a lot of videos that Europeans uses this technique (back reel) when theyre catching 2 lb + perch on light line, they dont use the drag system...

+1 Big Time. There are countless reels out there that have silky smooth drags that will work with 4, 6, and 8 pound line. Many don't even have the option to turn off the anti-reverse. Any fish worth catching on that light of line better be on a reel with a real drag, not that silly back reeling jazz. That's kinda like people who hold their spinning reel upside down and reel it backwards.[laugh]

Get ya a new reel. Mine rarely last 3 seasons. The more money ya spend the longer they last. Impossible to back reel on big fish. Run baby run!

well see thats the thing, the reel is fairly new, its got under a year on it and its pretty much always had this issue, i just did my best to ignore it. i think im going to find out what model it is, looking at Abu Garcia's page they pretty much have parts for every single reel they have out on the market. as far as the whole drag debate that i seem to have started, in my experience most modern reels work just fine. I have successfully caught fish ranging anywhere from 5-10 lbs on an ultralight set up and 4 lb braided using reels in the $60-$80 range and relying solely on their drags. on that note im considering on getting a quantum reel. my dad has been using his snapshot since 2005 and it still works fine to this day!

I once fished Utah Lake with an angler who made a similar statement. The first decent channel cat he hooked it broke his line, because he couldn't respond quickly enough from reeling to allowing the reel to spin freely.

when was the last time you changed the line . it could simply be bad line causing your problem I would clean and oil the reel and replace the line.
