Miller's Flat Reservoir?
#1
So I have fallen in love with the lakes up in Fairview Canyon and fish them as often as I can. I have fished all but one, which is Miller's Flat Reservoir. From what little I have heard, people say that this reservoir has high winter kill, and is not as productive as nearby Huntington or Cleveland. I occasionally read DWR reports however that indicate people do have good experiences here fishing, and it can be very productive. I was wondering if anybody here on the board had any experience with this lake.

Millers flat is a place you can always catch fish. For what ever reason however, the fish never get very big. It is large enough and deep enough for carry over, but I have fished it since the 60's and I have only saw one fish of notable size caught there ( a 5lb rainbow my grand dad caught around 1970, and it was big news.) It was probably planted as a spawner. It is fun with a fly and bubble though, and great place for kids to fish.
Now the stream below the dam is a different story however ( one of the tributaries to the left fork of Huntington) Good place for wild cutthroat.

Miller Flat isn't known for big fish but they're in there. Never met the big guy that I had on the line a long time ago.

There are plenty of fish in there though. They're not all rainbows either...

Go get'em.

Thanks for the info (you too LOAH) are there any fly patterns that work the best over there? I often do both flies and hardware when I fish those lakes. Also, when you talk about the dam, are you referring to the Huntington dam?

Renegades, mesquitos, royal coachman are good bets. I was referring to the millers flat dam, the water that runs out of millers flat and Cleveland come together about 1/2 to 1 mile below millers flat and form the left hand fork of Huntington river. It is managed as a fly's and lures only wild cutthroat stream. There is atrial system all the way down stream to Huntington canyon, however since the seeley fire only the top few miles would be productive (until you hit the burn area)
