Bait Bonanza!
#1
Besides the plethora of other benefits wrought by the rain today came a bonanza of bait. My patio this morning was aswarm with worms escaping drowning.

Yup, I scooped 'em up! If there's a break in the deluge in the next few days, I'll certainly sneak out and tempt a panfish or three.

[#0000FF]All ya need is some marinara sauce and dinner is served. They don't squirm as much going down if you cook them first.[/#0000FF]

Aswarm, not a gaggle, not a covey, not a mob, not herd, not a bevy, but aswarm? Teeming little critters

Coulda woulda shoulda said "asquirm." And they still are! The astounding thing is that the patio surface is a good five inches above ground level. How the little wrigglers get up there is beyond me, but I've been picking up a few every little while all day.

That's a good idea. Think I'll take a walk around my property. Wouldn't hurt to restock my worm fridge (I really do have a worm fridge.)

Suweet. Thanks for pointing that out Rocky. Been so busy doing the salsa around the kitchen all day, hadn't even thought of fishing (well, as if - more like, Sad I wasn't going, so busied myself with other tasks/chores).

Took a brief wander outside with a flashlight. 5 minutes well spent. I think I'm gonna need a bigger bucket! Might just take another gander in a while. So by the new fishing regs, I can bring home a bucket, and go fill it again, right? Or do I have to wait until tomorrow? Suppose I could just go out after midnight, make the neighbors REALLY wonder!
Seemed like in the time I walked down the length of sidewalk, a new crop had creeped. And they were some chunk toads too.

Can't say I practiced selective harvest, if they were big enough to get a hold of, I did. Smarmy swarmies they are! Even had a few doubles! And the ones that still had a "foothold" in the ground put up a pretty good fight! Not to mention the escape artists amongst them.

Gave me an excuse to pull out the bedding, and turnover my bait cooler to - well, bait. Topped it with some tomato skins, then shredded newspaper and tomatillo skins. Serendipity!

My other farming efforts have been paying off too.

If I can make enough to hold until ice, who needs "spits"!

FWIW, if you've ever wondered - Turtles DO like worms! Now which of these would go best with fried worms?

Yes these storms make bait catching easy. My kids were playing with them yesterday.

We were doing the smae thing Saturday.

Made our 1st outing to collect firsat thing in the morning. Then put up 7qts of Spaghetti Sauce (sorry no photos taken of either one). Got a second collection in between 1st and 2nd batch of 7 more qts.

Both should keep us well stocked for some time.

A good weekend - if you can't be out fishing - gardening, canning and collecting bait are the next best things!

I still owe you some spinners and stickers. Haven't forgotten, your envelope keeps staring at me from my napkin holder. Just being a slacker on getting the tying gear our of the closet... it'll happen! (soon)
