Bear Lake Mac Spawn
#1
Anticipation is keeping me waiting...

Heading up to fish this week hopefully, anyone have words of wisdom?

Strickly C&R and hopefully some photo oportunities will be had.

Going to try slipping the tin can Wed night and be ready to hit the lake at O'dark:30....

Am I better off fishing the rock pile or heading to the East Side? Looking for macs mostly....

Years past we have had better luck trolling Cisco Beach but I'm open to any help (if your willing, I understand if not).... lures, depth location location location.

Scott posted on the Utah DWR site to try the east side at 85 FOW. Maybe he will put some more details here. Later J

Thank you very much I just read his report.
My Cuddy Buddy bought a yard sale $10 tackle box full of very large flatfish this summer. I bought a couple of larger dodgers and can't wait to give em a try. Going to throw on some Kokanee gear, white tubes tipped with chub... Move to spoons and even try the pop gear if I have too...
Last couple of years I kept 1 of the lines at 45 fow to hit cuts.

Am I missing anything?

You probably have it and didn't mention it, but I'd have a good finder and a down rigger and I think you should do okay. I hope to go chase them soon as well. Let us know how you fair. Later J

Do the lakers spawn sooner in Bear Lake than they do in the Gorge?

Seems like they start stacking up in a pre spawn mode about now but the spawn is the last two weeks of Oct into the first week in Nov, in most years.

I spoke with the marina folks yesterday. $20 to slip for the night, so we'll curl up in the cuddy and be on the water ready to go. Then the gal stated they have dry storage for $35 month so might just leave the tin can up there for the month cause like Arnold says, "I'll be back"!

That sounds like a great idea, verses pulling a boat over the canyon a couple times. Might be easier to get over there extra times too if you need to go check on the boat. Good luck. J

The gal you spoke with at the marina is my wife. I try to keep her well informed of the fishing conditions as I hear about them or learn of them first hand through my personal experience. As the month of October progresses the macs will start spawning. It's been warmer than usual this summer and fall and it seems that the macs are deeper than normal. I usually can catch pups from the marina rocks about now during the first hour of sunlight, but so far this year I've caught nothing. It will happen, just a bit later than normal until the water cools a bit.

I'm no expert so it could be that the macs are still going to spawn at the normal time, but deeper. Perhaps our local biologist, bearlakefishguy, could shed more light on it. Keep your boat handy because when its happening you gotta jump on it, but I would bet after this week it will be doing good.

would it be worth it to drive up there from salt lake to try the shore fishing within the next few weeks?

Time it for around October 15-20th and it will be worth it. It's an early morning or late afternoon into evening thing from shore, but from a boat the bite is good for a few hours in the morning and a few hours before dark.

and the report...
-Had to drive thru the snow Wed evening pulling the boat up.
-Slept in the Cuddy and all I got to say is brrrrrrr cold.
-Got outfished by a girl.... again!!!
-Fished the east side all morning and marked lots of schools mostly hugging the bottom in 80-130 FOW. so hard to get the riggers to run that fine line on the bottom without hanging up.
-My loving wife landed the only fish that measured 25".
See how carefully she holds it? I'm glad she had the joy, mine is still waiting for me.
-It was caught on a 3.5" RMT pink tear drop dodger followed by a purple kokanee killer tipped with chub at 68 feet down on the rigger.
-We did leave the boat in the gated dry storage area so the boat is possitioned for a few more trips this year.

That's all I got except that is one big lake that kicks my but everytime I venture out, can't wait to get back...
-On the possitive our new boat handled it like a champ....

Scott, you are a lucky man to have your lady brave those cold overnight temps up there just so she could out fish you[Wink]. Thanks for the reports and pics. Hopefully the good catching will turn on soon.
