Solo Mediation (Solo Uintas Trip)
#1
Decided to get in some "solo meditation" (S&M) in the uintas before my left wrist surgery (3 weeks ago). Having never backpacked solo before I was hoping to not see anyone once I had left the road, I got my wish this time. What an experince!

225 car miles later I was getting somewhere......

2 miles of hiking off trail with a GPS lead me right to where I needed to be..............

Once the camp site was found.........

It was time for 2 hrs of camp chores. For those of you that don't know that involves....

Tent Establishment.........

Collection of firewood, and Water purification.......

Then the fun can start...........

Then comes hanging the backpack far from camp, followed by the creation of a fire...........

Once you survive the night cuddling your bear spray, you get the hell outta there!

I'm jealous. Very nice. 2 hours of camp chores and then cuddling a can of bear spray is crazy though. My camp chores for that would be 20minutes to set that up. Plus don't you have a dog? Mine has died and gone to heaven the few chances she's had to run off black bears. I really don't think I've ever seen a dog more ecstatic than her response to the chance to chase a bear.
Reminds me I had a friend paranoid of black bears when we backpacked in from the remote north end of Baxter State park in Maine before I had a dog. I has dozing off in a lean-to overlooking a lake at dusk when a bear spooked him. I was a bit Confused waking up from that half asleep state. Still I got a kick out of my scared friend freaking out and the equally scared bear running away. We managed a 5 day trip without seeing anyone on that trip.

Well with my wrists it did take me quite a bit of time to use my water filter, which was dirty from the last trip so it would only drip for each squeeze of the handle. After 1.5 liters of that I switched to boiling the water instead.

Firewood and starting the fire took up a most of my time. I couldn't haul a lot of wood with my wrists and the wood was not very close. That and I just plain suck at getting a fire started.

The dog couldn't join me as it was below her comfort level temperature wise at night and it was very bouldery on the way up and down. One torn nail on that dog would have sent me home. I also hit a few other spots on the way home and I wasn't sure if dogs were allowed. I know for sure one of the rivers didn't.

Good to hear you had a good time buddy. Gotta love how surgeries make a five minute job take an hour, or throw a hitch in a plan. Makes you realize how nice it was when you were 100%...

My left arm is still F.U.B.A.R but I'm getting to the point that I can start backpacking again so I guess I'll be content with that :0

Did you see much wildlife up there? I saw the same black bear at the same watering hole two days in a row. I am a little worried he is getting a little too used to eating the scraps on the shore from fisherman...

He was wary of me still though, so that's good. And he liked posing for photos so I hope I find him again next year.

We should hook up and hook up sometime soon! Still looking for crappy up at East?

Good luck brother and heal up quick.
