Catfish Contest 2014 - FINAL
#1
And we now have the [url "http://www.bigfishtackle.com/cgi-bin/gforum/gforum.cgi?post=870953;forum_view=forum_view_collapsed;page=unread#unread"]final results[/url] tallied and entered. It should come as no surprise that once again, the NORTH has prevailed. The SOUTHern crew put up a tough battle, some long fought hours on the water, and some very nice catches, but alas, it was not enough.

Gmwahl walks away with both the biggest cat, and the highers individual score, with no surprise Boatloadofkids is close behind also scoring in two 30+ inchers, as well as the honor of the largest carp.

It was a lot of fun to manage the contest, and oversee the contestants grueling battles, and silly smacktalk and posturing. You are all great sports and a fun bunch to battle with. Too bad I never really got back after them since spring. Cycles.
Big thanks to everyone that signed up and posted up your entries. We'll be sure to do it again next year, so keep your hooks sharp and your bait stinky!

Hey John thanks for the results, nice details and way to go getting one of the top five fish for the north. It was a lot of fun and a new addiction. Went out for a few Friday and tied into a heck of a nice fight that fish pulled line like crazy. I figured it was the one I had been waiting for. Ended up mid twenties but sure fought great in the deep water. Well thanks again. J

Is it just me or is your south team a little short on members? Looks a bit lopsided.

Yote, it was fun that's for sure. And at least I wasn't dead last, close but not last.[laugh] Enjoyed reading all the posts this summer, and the Cutler Flotilla was a hoot. Definitely have to do that again next year. Mike and BLK, you guys stuck it out pretty close. Been several years since I fished UL. Gonna have to give it another try next year.
Totally enjoyed meeting several of the BFT regulars, and look forward to meeting more. Those of you that fish through the ice, have a great winter, be careful, and keep us warm weather fishermen posted on your exploits.

I am glad to see so many "cat-a-holics" have a place to come together and share their passion for them. Thanks CYS for running it again, its been fun to watch.

Thanks again Yote... always a fun contest. Congrats to Gmwahl on his top fish. Very well done.

We are a little short on fishermen here in the south but no shortage of fish. Now, next year............

I still look for someone to pull out a super nice cat at any time. I thought it would happen this year but next year for sure. I'm talkin' 'bout something in the 20+ pound and 35+ inch range. They are out there... both north and south and it is just a matter of time before someone hooks in to one. Hope it's me.[Wink]

Wow John, I go hunting and come back to see the results tallied already. Awsome!

I guess I never really expected to win this thing so its really nice. I thought for sure that there would be a butt load of guys from the south with the population advantage they have over us northerners, but instead they had a boatloadofkids to fight for their side and what a respectable fight it was! Talk about fish-a-holics!

It's been really fun and the north has a great group of competitors that are a privelege to get to have on our team. I'm happy you put this together yote. I'll be in for next year and I hope we get a big group for both sides during the next go around. I too was half expecting to see a 20+ pounder coming from one of the puddles we fish, maybe next year.

BTW, beyond bragging rights, what does a guy win?[Wink]

Hey BLK, just wanted to let you know that you and your crew were fierce competitors and had me fretting and fishing like crazy! I hope that you're game for next year and I wish y'all luck. Also, did any of your crew score the juvenile top spot?

[#0000FF]Okay, okay, okay. I have stated that I don't fish competitively any more. But I've had just about enough of the smack talk from those northern amateurs.

Whaddayasay we team up next year and show them how it's really done?

PS...I know where they plant the bigger fish.

Gmwah-- You're right about the fierce competition and you are a good example. The competition is always fierce, with lots of smack, always good natured and fun. Even when The Judge rules an entry short by .5 inch, nobody gets their hooks bent over it. I think this is the third year Yote has put it together... and yes, the third year the north has won.[mad]

The winner gets a new 2015 fully decked out bass boat. (Note: It fits in the palm of your hand). And, best of all the winner gets top bragging rights as catter of the year. Yote will also waive your entry fee for next year and he usually puts a little something together, mostly at his own expense, for the top score. The bragging rights are for sure the best part of the contest. The $5 entry fee does not provide much for the funding of prizes. The fun of the competition is the real prize.

It looks like one of my crew members, Catcarsen, will walk off with the top youth-catcher award. He had an 81.5 score and unless there is another "youth" with a higher score.... Catcarsen and Catnipper are 13-year-old twins. I have done my duty well in establishing them as lovers of fishing. They have an older brother, Catrat, who is a new dad, full time student, and holding down a full time job. He should have more time for fishin' next year. We will be ready to go as soon as Yote declares a start date. Lookin' forward to it.[Smile]

TubeDude-- You're on! I'll even cover your entry fee and provide the bait I have caught with that special lure you gave me. We need all the help we can get to silence this uncouth northern bunch once and for all. I have heard them say some really nasty things about you... stuff that I cannot even quote on this family-friendly forum. As the man of honor I know you to be you are fully justified in forsaking you pledge to not fish competitively. We'll get 'em next year for sure.[Wink]

I can see that 2015 trophy now... resting comfortably in the sunny south where it has always belonged.

Can't wait.

So where is te boundary line for north and south? I highly doubt it's the Mason-Dixon Line...[bobhappy]

Well, bragging rights are fine, but I'm not much for really bragging. I just got lucky, but.........

Oh sure, bring on tubedude, he could catch fish in a bucket of water, the guy is human chum! With half his body dangling in the water all the time I'm betting he's exuding some sort of natural fish attractant! [Tongue]

Ya know TD its not really competitive more fun than serious, but it sure has been enjoyable. It will be a blast to have you as part of the fun, but I'm hoping that won't drop me out of the top ten. I can see I'll have to apply the BLK persistence to have a chance. Anyway hope you will join in the fun. Later J

albinotrout-- Nah, not the MD line. If I remember correctly the dividing line was somewhere mid-SLC....Yote could clarify. You can enter north or south as long as you declare which team you are on and your fish are caught in that area. Yote can correct me if needed.

gmwahl-- Luck?? yeah I guess there is an element of luck involved but as I remember you put in some pretty serious time after the cats. Take advantage of the bragging rights while you have them. Bragging, in moderation, is entirely appropriate and even expected in this cat contest. Do your braggin' on this forum rather than with "friends" or you run the risk of having a hand bull of nightcrawlers shoved down your throat.[Wink]

Agree with you about TubeDude... the guy can flat out catch fish. He will tip the scales to the south next year. I look forward to spending some time with him.

I live in North Salt Lake. If I were to join up next year I would go with the south just to give them a chance.[sly]

Haha! Well, if TD joins in for next year you guys are going to need him. We just won't get to relax quite as much as we have been doing.[Smile]
I'll be studying up on the habits of big channel cats over the winter in order to have a shot at it next year. There were some real big cats caught by some guys that weren't in the contest, but may be next year so we'll need to step up our game even more. I had three over 30" cats besides the ones I posted to the contest landed on my boat this year....all kids! They were 33", 31", and 30 1/2". I suspect that two of them will be bigger next year and I know that the 33" got turned into fried fish! That little girl wasn't about to let that fish go. Fish of a lifetime for her.

Yup, I'll be back at it next spring with the hope that I can at least get into the top three........oh and ya, the north is gonna spank y'all again so ya best bribe TD to help out........the south is gonna need it[Wink]

I'll say it again, you ALL are great sports, and the privilege is all mine. The only thing bigger than TDs catches are his stories.
FWIW - there were about an equal number of "entrants" requested, though those that actually entered, and those that genuinely submitted entries were more and more skewed.
The dividing line is far less that half the state, especially considering it goes much farther east on the south end than the north. I think we might just open to reciprocal waters also. I do think more support from the lower end of the Bear will surely tip the scales, in the right direction I mean.

I hear Cutler is going down again starting Oct 20th. Thought didn't seem to help the south or hurt the north this year. Hope they flush out a mess of carp in the process!

If I weren't spending so much on legal fees, I would gladly put up a bass-boat catting machine! In the meantime, might have to settle for the matchbox model.
Mike I'll PM you, send your snail mail, and I'll get a care-package going. BLK, if you can help coordinate your lad, I'll PM him too. You also need a Carp prize. Need a new arrow?

I think we could follow TDT's model, and double the scores, so no more 1/2 point for folks to gripe about, and your catches will seem twice as big as before! Plus, as discussed, extend the end date another month, for them that thrive on fall-catting.

Open to suggestions. I may not have packed up the boats for winter, but I'm starting to itch for short rods, sleds, and warm cozy tents that don't get blown away! Here perchie perchie!

Next year's predicted BIG Northern catch

So on reciprocal waters would that cover the Colorado river between the Utah and Colorado area? Hint I usually do some fishin on the Colorado side.[Wink] usually in the grand junction area.[bobWink]
