Shore Fishing at Strawberry
#1
Have the water temps dropped enough at Strawberry yet to catch some fish from the shore or are we not there yet?

If they are low enough, has anyone had success from the banks recently?

Depends on how you're planning on fishing.

For fly fishing, absolutely not! I was there yesterday and trying to throw streamers from shore, thinking that the water had turned over. It hasn't. TONS of moss everywhere close to shore. I managed one on a white bugger and my dad got a few hits on a hopper, but it's still not that magic, close-to-shore time at the berry.

With that being said, the bait fisherman seem to be doing all right. I saw a couple guys with full stringers of fish walking to their car. The place they were fishing was littered with some chartreuse power bait, so apparently that is working.

Stupidly, I didn't bring my float tube or pontoon. I spoke with a guy who was fishing in the same area we were and he said between him and his friend, they had caught about 50. And he had a few nice rainbows for his dinner to prove it. When I asked him which flies he had been using, he was using pretty much the same stuff I was - an assortment of bugger patterns. He was casting flies on a spinning rig. The trick, he said, was getting out past the moss & weeds. He said right past the weed bed was the go-to area to go out and cast.

Can't be too much longer now till the water will turn over. Hopefully sooner rather than later! It is gorgeous up there right now. All of the aspens are at their peak of bright yellow gold color.

Hope you have better luck than I did!

A couple weeks ago I was on my pontoon catching. One I could not revive, and was over 21" so I kicked in to shore. A gentleman offered to put it on a stringer for me and I went back out. He was casting Mepps.
Wind kicked up so we came in. there were two fish on the stringer. My 21+ and a fat 24" His.
Last weekend I was fishing in 7' to 18' of water and caught plenty on a bait fish fly.
I don't see why fishing from shore couldn't be great. Maybe plan on moving the shore line a bit.

I usually do fairly well around this time of year, and ive been fishing strawberry exclusively from shore for the past 7 years. I use white and rainbow pattern tube jigs. Anywhere from an inch to 3 inches long depending on how deep the water is in a given spot. If its pretty mossy i like to use smaller lighter tubes so i can keep them relatively close to the surface. I cast them out past the weedline and i reel them in slowly while twitching the rod every couple of seconds. Maribou jigs work as well but they hang up easily so you have to be careful, black and white are the best colors. Tipping your jigs with a worm or chub meat increases the amount of hits.
