Silver Flat Res - Oct 10
#1
Fished Silver Flat Res up AF canyon today from about 7:30 - 3:30 taking a couple breaks. Beautiful fall colors was a highlight of the trip; I had never been up that way before.

Fishing was constant, but not very hot. Averaged about a fish an hour, but they weren't very big, largest probably about 10". They were hitting on probably 50% of the casts, but not hooking well (shame on them!). Used some flies I purchased from a fellow BFT member. They didn't disappoint. Caught one on Jake's spinner, too. Didn't think about the full moon being a factor until I read some posts tonight. That can be a good excuse for me, I suppose.

Favorite part of the day was helping out a small family of four: I walk by them just before I need to head out to try a spot just past them. Mom asks me if I've caught anything and I offered to give them some flies. Dad says: "we don't take this very seriously," with a grin and so I keep walking.

Three minutes later I catch a fish and Mom was super excited, telling her kids "that guys just caught a fish!" She comes over and proceeds to tell me that they've been fishing a ton, but have never felt even so much as a nibble. Despite her protesting that I shouldn't give her my tackle, I rig up both her kids poles with files behind a bubble. Dad helps his daughter cast her pole, and not two minutes later they have a fish. You would have thought Dad won the lottery. I wanted to hang around and see them have more success, but I wanted more for them to be alone as a family. Gave them some more flies, in case they run out, and bid them farewell.

That was fun. Funny how perspective changes. I read this forum voraciously to try to learn from those with more experience; and I feel silly at some of the weird things I try when fishing. Yet, to that family, I was probably the fish whisperer.

Darn lens cap thingy on the camera. Didn't notice until I saw the pics on the computer.

Aaron: Nice report! It's gratifying to hear you and others had some success with the flies.
