Me and my buddy are going down to Joes Valley this Saturday. He's looking for musky and I'm looking for splake and musky. What are those two species behavior this time of year? Are they hugging the shoreline or are they out deep? Where's a good place to fish there as I've never been. PM'S are welcome.

Hit the rocky east shoreline. If you have a boat hit the rocky shore south of the dam. The area around seeley cove (opposite side from the dam where the marina is) It useually holds fish.
Check your proclamation , it is closed for splake for a period in late fall sometime I don't recall the dates

Thanks for the response. The only thing I see in the regs about J.V. is the limit is four trout with only 1 over 18".

They did away with the splake closure in 2013 so the regulation is 1 tiger Muskie over 40" and four trout with only one over 18". The places you mentioned are good places to hit.[fishin]

What flies do you recommend? I'll be wading (if possible) So are those places wading friendly?

I haven't chased the tigers so I can't help you there, and no, the places mentioned are not wadable for the most part. If you are going to fly fish from shore I would do it along the southeast or the northeast side of the reservoir. As far as flies for splake, I've had the best luck with dark stuff. Black/green, tan/green, black/purple crystal buggers or any minnow pattern that you like to fish in sizes 2-8. Black or Canada blood leeches in sizes 4-8. I would use a sink-tip if you have one and cast out as far as you can, count it down, and then strip it back in, trying different retrieve rates. There are some large splake in there but they are not easy to catch without a tube or boat to access them. I've heard the tigers cruise in close to shore so you might be able to pick one up on a minnow pattern.
Good luck if you go.
