Downtown fishing in Provo
#1
I've recently had the bug to go fishing and was looking for some nearby waters close to Provo. There are a few nice looking sections of the Provo river where it runs through town...is it legal to fish.n there, and has anyone had success?

it is definitely legal, in fact you don't have the same tackle restrictions as you do further up the canyon, and there greater fish diversity. I have fished it and always have had a good time.[cool] Find a spot that looks good and let us know how it goes.

Some of the best fishing on the Lower Provo ( Olmstead Dam to Lake) are in Town.
Access is dicey, but once in the River you can pretty much wade anywhere you want. One really nice area is from the diversion dam at Deseret Industries, upstream to the diversion by the ShopKo Shopping center. You will be going under several bridges in this stretch. With the water this low, my preference would be a Panter Martin, 2PMRG ( size 2, black body, yellow dots, gold blade ) . Have fun !!!

I've done pretty well in a lot of "in town" spots. The closer to the lake, the more variety you can catch. I stood in one area and caught white bass and browns until I couldn't stand it. The white bass even had some nice size (and fight) to them. Crazy. I went back to the same spot last year and saw some catfish had moved in. I haven't explored all of the lower provo but it can be a fun place to fish. The "human hatch" is usually a lot less in town as well. Have fun and take some pics.

I fish a lot of the in-town spots on my lunch break. The browns are all over it. There are some pretty good ones too.

Getting down closer to the lake is addictive though. Every fish is a mystery and mysteries can get pretty big.

The top end of the valley is good too, behind the Riverwoods businesses.

I have only ever tried fishing in town once and I was dinking around with using inner strands of paracord as line to see if it worked or not.

There were definitely browns just chilling in the water though, I could see them.

I'm guessing you would have success with small spinners and or micro jigs under a small float like a trout magnet.

Then again, in town bait is allowed, so why not just try worms? Ha.

I fish the Provo all the time from below Deseret Industries all the way to Utah Lake. I've had good success with either 2.5" or 3" gulp minnows on 1/16 or 1/8 oz jigheads. Keep changing colors until you find one that they like. Black Shad and Smelt seem to work most of the time. You will snag and lose some, but they work very well. There are some monster browns in there if can find them. I haven't fished any of the river above the dam by DI, but I probably will in the next couple of weeks.

Many, many years ago when I was going to BYU, one of the guys on my floor caught a 6 lb brown under the State Street bridge by DI. The biggest I've caught is about 20", but I've caught several of those. You might even catch the oddball walleye, white bass, or catfish. Or, (heaven forbid) a carp. Smile

That's neat to hear you fish that area all the time. My buddy and I worked the area mainly from the dam upstream about a quarter mile and caught 5 on worms fished weight/bobberless. They wouldn't hit a spinner to save our lives though. Thanks for the tip on the setup...I'll have to give it a try for next time [Wink]
