Strawberry on Saturday
#1
took my son-in-law up to Strawberry on Saturday to see if we could break the jinx he has been suffering. Got on the water about 10:00 and headed north out of the marina toward Mud creek in my little 12 footer. We were marking fish here and there, but no big concentrations anywhere. We tried depths from 8 - 45 feet. We started by dragging a jake's lure, and a worm behind a submerged clear plastic bubble. The only thing they seemed to be interested in was the worm. We switched out the jake's for a variety of other lures, but the only other thing that worked was a small white paddle bug tipped with worm. When we got to mud creek there were 2 guys in a bass tracker who were doing well with white tube jigs tipped with sucker meat. they were just leaving when we got there so they gave us their spot and the sucker meat. I didn't see a BFT decal, but then I don't have one either. If they see this post, thanks, we had a good time for the next hour or so. All we caught were cuts, and all of them were between 19 and 21 inches. I was hoping for some rainbows to fry up, but not this time. The road to the marina was snow packed when we got there, but had melted off in spots when we left. The ramp was about 75% snow free, and there is about 6 inches of snow on the bank. I didn't see ice anywhere, so unless it gets cold again, ice fishing is still some time off. We left earlier than I would have liked, but that's wife. My son-in-law was able to break his jinx though, and we had a good day on the water. Again, thanks to the guys at Mud creek for the tips, the hot spot and the sucker meat.

All cutts 19" to 21" sounds like you got the Jinx off big time. That is down right awesome.
Did the sucker meat only work with the white tube jig or did it work on a regular hook?

Sounds like you had a good day. A white tube jig and chub meat is all we use in the fall from sept to dec. and there are days that you just can't keep them off.

We didn't try the sucker meat on a bare hook, but we did try worms that way and didn't have much success. I don't think you would have much success without the white jig/tube to attract them. I have tried both ways ice fishing and never had much success without the attractor.

And I have tried to catch fish at the Berry with just the white tube jig (without a worm or meat) and can't catch anything.

So our tests now show that one without the other is difficult at best. But boy, combine them and it's FISH ON!

And, I have also found that adding some anchovy Pro-Cure Super Gel increases your odds even more.

My experience has been if they are aggressive and hitting a tube jig while it is being reeled in that no attractant is required. If they are not that aggressive some sort of attractant makes a huge difference.
