Scofield Ice
#1
We have plans on taking some youth to Scofield this weekend. With the temps in the 60's here Thursday I am a little nervous about the ice conditions. Anyone have an updated ice condition?

I'm not sure how thick it is this week but if you go the safest area is South East side or the North side.

Make sure you got ice cleats, picks, and long rope.

I went last weekend. There was about 5" on the northeast side. Great fishing for small cutthroats in 8-10 feet of water.

Went up Wed. Ice was 10" in the dam arm. Ice was building all day. Small white and dark green tubes. Tipped with chub did the best. Take some worm fish with small hook and one inch of worm. and you will keep the youth intertwined.

I was planning on going to scofield tomorrow with my son but had a guy say the ice all pulled away and rotted out. I have a hard time believing that he said he was there yesterday. If the ice is compromised I don't want to take my son. Anyone able to confirm that or is it still good

The weather station at the dam indicates it only got to 23 degrees last night. But the previous three nights were in the mid teens. Seems like ice maintaining (if not building) weather to me. Today's warm wind won't help, but I doubt the temps up there could "rot" out the already formed ice. Esp if it was 10 inches thick a few days ago.

We went near the dam this morning (Saturday) it was 8" thick. Fishing was terrible until about 11 then it picked up. Nothing of size but not many choices right now for ice.

went to Madison bay yesterday (Saturday 13th) and fishing was great a few chubs and lots of cuts. ice was 8.5 inches thick everywhere i went. walked about 300 yards south of ramp to 12 feet of water and ice was the same and there were lots of chubs there and no cuts. best fishing was in 5-7 feet of water around the ramp.

[cool] Thanks for the reports, guys.

You know, you'd think that with all of the tiger trout that the DWR planted the past 5 years and with less and less rainbows left, that the tigers and cuts would be doing their job in reducing the chub populations there, but there must be too many anglers taking home what they catch still at that lake, like when there were lots rainbows there and not the same regs as at strawberry.

5-10 years ago at Scofield I'd always catch lots of big chunky rainbows with the occasional cut, and no chubs. Now it's way different, from the ice fishing reports this year.

You can't help but wonder if there isn't a lot of poaching going on there with the same anglers that were used to taking home 4 fish of any size there still doing the same...

It's too big of a job. You'll remember that they poisoned Strawberry to reduce the chubs first. They didn't try to plant enough cutts to do the job. You MIGHT see a reduction in chubs after another 20 years or so, but I doubt it.

I was out Monday (12-15-14) Great ice at Madison Bay. Caught chubs in 7-10 feet and cuts in 4-6 feet. Caught a couple nice cuts in the slot. Started about 9 and fishing was great, but slowed way down at 1.

Anyone have a Scofield ice condition and fishing report from Monday 15th or Tuesday 16th?
