Ice fishing time is nearly here and I am consider buying a few items for Christmas. Last year I bought the Eskimo Quick Fish 6, a hand auger, a couple of ugly stick poles, a sled, and lures.
This year, I am really considering a couple of tip ups and probably a Marcum vx1 or the Vexilar fl8se flasher.
Does anyone have any advice for some like me starting out?
I am not sure what the Utah regs are on having a tip up and a regular pole at the same time either.. I would think that it would be consider 2 pole and that is legal now in Utah even without buying the permit for it.
Any help is appreciated!
Thanks!

Yes you will be able to use two poles this year.
I also suggest trying a Jaw Jacker over a tip up.
Either Flasher that you have listed would be a great choice.

Grew up in Midwest and have used tip ups for years for walleyes and pike but for trout I'd go the Jawjacker route. You'll catch more AND the best part you'll be fighting them with a rod instead of hand over hand.
Can't go wrong with a Marcum, Vex or Bird flasher. Just get the one in your price range. I have three Marcums because I find the separation to be better and I like the zoom features but any flasher is better than no flasher.

marcum is a great brand of electronics i love them and they have great customer service. i have the LX7 and will never go away from them my next after marcum wouldn't be a vex. i had the ice 55 before my marcum and now have it as a back up to my marcum. i really liked my bird it just wasn't as good as marcum. as for tip ups i have never used one i leave the drag at the lightest setting and when a fish starts running with your bait you can hear it. no need to watch for a flag. i have always thought about it but every time i go to buy one i find myself ordering a tuned up custom rod instead.

Thanks again everyone for the info.
I ended up going with the Vexilar and a couple of Frabill tip ups. It is what I could afford for now.
Take care and I hope to see you on the ice!
