Its pretty consistent every year. I have been on the South end the week before Christmas. The entire lake usually caps over the week between Christmas and New Years.

The wind generally picks up around 11:00 and can get pretty interesting.

I love it up there! I love catching the Splake up there, always a good fight! When I get board I fish for Perch which is great fun for kids! Now if you are lucky you might catch a laker but I have never been so lucky.

Tip: Go out 10 to 15 feet from the shore drill a hole and drop your line down if you get snagged by weeds go out 2 to 3 more feet. There is a hug weed line around the lake and if you can get a foot away from the weed line fishing is always good.

If anyone knows how to catch a laker ice fishing I would like to know a tip or two.

I am not really an expert on the lakers, having landed one and losing another one in the fight, but both were hooked in about 65' of water right on the bottom using a 4" tube jib with a chunk of chub meat.

This is one area where having electronics really pays off both for finding the right spot and knowing when there are fish down there. It can be a long time in between lakers swimming through, so knowing when to keep jigging and when you can ignore it for a while is nice.

With the electronics you will see fish swimming through at all levels of the water column. These are usually rainbows or splake. Fun to go after if nothing is happening on the bottom, but if you are targeting the lakers, they tend to hug the bottom.

[bobWink] Freinds and I have been to fish lake for the past four years right around the end of January. Always catch fish sometime someone gets lucky and lands a laker.
Mostly we catch splake and a couple guys go for the perch 50 plus a day!
We usually fish the south east side It can get cold so be prepared!!!

Don't forget about the brutal winds. Most of the time it's pointless to bring a pop up ice tent because you might just go kite surfing in the mean while instead of tent surfing then break some rods.

Last year I was fishing the north end and got to watch a Eskimo pop up tent blow across the entire lake from the south end and it kept heading north across land. About 15 minutes later saw a truck fly by on the road heading after it. I highly recommend anchoring all four corners and the sides with ice anchors.

Has anyone been out on the ice to confirm it is fishable? Thinking of going out for perch on Saturday and wanted to check before making the drive.

My recommendation is to call the quiet fly fishing shop in Loa (435) 616-2319. They'll likely have all the updates on ice and thickness for fish lake. M-F normal business hours. If you do, share what you find out!

My dad was down that way for a meeting the first part of this week and said fish lake was ice free.

I got his vm this morning, so no info from quiet fly. But I did reach the lodge. It doesn't sound like there is enough ice for me to venture out on.

You're certainly jumping the gun on Fish Lake ice. Especially considering the rather warm winter we've had so far.

On a NORMAL year, you'll see ice right about New Year's. This is NOT a normal year. I'm just hoping that we'll have a bit of fishable ice by New Year's. It looks like we may have a some cold weather on the way, but I'm starting to doubt ice by New Year's Day.

Well, that's about as close to being accused of over-optimisim as I have had in quite a while. [Wink]

Been chilly up there this week, so was hoping that perhaps it was ready to freeze, and just need a couple nights. Apparently not.

Temps at the lodge the past couple days.

Might be wishful thinking on your part. It has not been cold down here at all. I fished open water on Otter Creek two weeks ago from the shore and Fish Lake was wide open.
Call before you head down here.
