Hyrum Fire & Ice
#1
Took the toon to Hyrum this morning to do some trolling and the fishing was hot, but the water was cold 38.4 deg F. Had 3 fish to net in 15 minutes. Then I went to the south side and it slowed down for awhile, but on the way back it was great again. Ended up with 16 fish in a little over 2.5 hours. Three were over 14" and one was a fat toad. Fun day for sure great to troll in late December. 1.4 mph on koke gear. Later J

Oh the fish seemed to be top to bottom. I caught them on leadcore line and just mono out 50'. So it's a good time to fish you can't hardly miss them. I heard they had planted a bunch of big fish but I didn't find any of them. But I did get an 11" tiger today. Started wavy this morning but ended up about glass calm. J

That one is a football. Did you happen to notice what it had been feeding on when you cleaned it?

She was a spawner full of mostly ripe eggs. They were the largest I've ever seen eggs in a bow before. So I guess that's why she was so big. I couldn't get my hand around her and it was like handling a greased football. I really need a lip gripper. But all I seen was green goo in her stomach. I didn't really look though. Later J

I have never fished Hyrum so I'm not familiar with the available food sources there. Sounds like zooplankton to me. Definitely a good fish. Thanks for the info.

Considering I only got 1 fish on the whole south side which probably took over half the time to cover. Ya the north side was hot fishing. Had 3 doubles and probably lost 8-10 fish in addition to the ones I caught. It was a very good morning. Sure was hard to quit and go home to catch up honey doos. But don't want Santa mad at me this time of year. Hope you're feeling better. Later J

Wish I was a little smarter on the biology side of things so I was more helpful. But the meat was perty orange about as nice of fish as I've cleaned in awhile. Hyrum is a nice pond but doesn't have the snails or fresh water shrimp that some lakes do to grow incredible fish. It does have a nice small perch crop that probably helps. For a popular spot with plenty of pressure it's a good place to fish. Later J

Yup, I actually caught the big one on the leadcore and it still put up a big fight. I love the leadcore for getting in the right zone but it sure ruins the fun of the fight unless you catch big enough fish. Wish there was a better way to do what leadcore does. I mean something more like just using mono. I have down riggers and they work too but it's not the same. Later J

I have noticed the perch population has increased the last couple of years at Hyrum. I targeted perch on a couple trips when the water was at it lowest level in late summer and did well. Had to weed through dozens of small ones to get a few larger perch. I used my fish finder to locate the schools and stay on top of them. Hopefully, we can find some larger perch through the ice if we can get some cold weather.

Been watching the same trend and hoping for a good ice season. Last year there were millions of 7"ers hope some grew up. Later J
