Bear Lake is hot 12_20_14

Fished in the snow, but calm waters today. I was jigging the whole time. Only two other boats on the rockpile the entire day and they were both trolling. From what I could see, one boat did well and the other did OK. As for me, I caught 11 fish (9 cutthroat, of which 5 were tagged; and two lakers). The biggest fish was a 12 lb laker, but two of the cutts were in the 5-6 lb range. I started in 52' but had more luck in about 40'. It is difficult to take pics when fishing by yourself, but I did get a few. I wanted to release all my fish ASAP, so I took a quick picture of a few after I remembered I had a camera on my phone! Duh. Good fishing up until 11am and then it just shut off. Oh, I was using 5" tubes tipped with cisco or a nightcrawler.

I knew I put the boat away too early this year.

Why on earth do you put your boat away? You have two outboards.....right? They don't need to be "winterized" like an inboard. There is nothing else to winterize on boats like ours, so get that baby out and up here. You missed out on some of the best whitefish fishing I have ever had on Bear Lake and now the trout are turning on. I'll be out there until it freezes....and if it doesn't I'll be fishing all winter. Oh, and I keep my boat outside, so I know it has to be colder up here at Bear Lake than down there.

Well , I don't go back to work until the 5th of January. I may come up and fish if the weather cooperates. I'll let you know if I decide to come up. Won't take long to put the batteries back in.

Very nice day indeed! I bet that big laker was a fun fight. A picture of a fish in a net sure doesn't do them justice On the tagged fish what is the best way to report them? I have heard a couple different stories on that. If we release the fish should we just get the info off the tag and what info about the fish?

Wow! Those are some beautiful fish! I kinda like the net pictures because it shows that you weren't stressing out the fish to take a selfie with them. If you're ever stuck fishing solo and want someone to come along just shoot me a pm. I'd for a chance to learn from you. I'd have to dig out my bag of frozen Cisco but that's what it's there for. I'll be up there the 10th of next month for sure but Bear lake is always worth a drive! Anyway again awesome fish! Glad to hear the trout are heating up!

If you catch a tagged fish, there is an address right on the tag to send the information to. I don't need the tag, just the number, length if you measured it, location caught, and finally if you released or kept the fish. If you plucked the tag out of the fish I need to know that too, since if the tag is removed, the fish is considered "harvested" even if you let the fish go, since the tag is no longer going to be caught again.

If you want to send me a PM on here with the same information, that would work too. However, if you snail mail me the tag info, I will send you an official letter with the previous information on the particular fish. Thanks.

Good to see you had a good day jigging. We trolled the east from Cisco to north Eden but still no lake trout. We boated 7 cutts. Biggest was around 5 pounds and two of of ours were tagged. We trolled in 65 to 70 feet of water going between 1.8 and 2.2 mph. We fought rough water all day with the south wind. Debated on hitting the pile instead but opted for the east side. I am planning on hitting the rock pile on Saturday the 27th and try my hand at jigging but keep the trolling option open. If you are available and looking to fish I would love to have you join me in my boat. Just drop me a PM if you want to go! Hopefully the weather holds
