First post on BFT. I have enjoyed reading all your posts for the last couple of years and figured it was time to give a little something back.
A few weeks back I spent the afternoon on Mantua and recorded the session with my fish finder. Attached is a depth map I created that a few of you might find useful, Merry Christmas!

Hey welcome aboard, and that is really cool tech that you used to produce the map... So how exactly did you get that to do that? Do you have to drive all over the pond and keep the graph recording and then it does a software merge map? It is really pretty accurate from what I've seen... there are a few small areas that are significantly different than their surroundings and so I'm sure if you didn't drive right over that spot the software wouldn't take them into account as it builds the profiles, but all in all that is really cool, thanks for posting it... Welcome and very impressive. How long did you have to spend on the water generating that map? Also, how fast are you able to have the boat moving and still create the map?

Thanks for the enthusiastic response.
How I made the map:
Setup fish finder to record.
Drive around the lake. Keep speed under about 6 mph. About half the track was done trolling at 1.5 mph. The rest was done at about 5.5 mph. I was on the water for about 4 hours. I could have done it in about an hour if I hadn't been fishing... This map shows my track. Colors show the depth at that point.

After I got home I grabbed the memory card from the fish finder and copied the recorded depth data to my PC.
Loaded the data into a program called ReefMaster that I used to generate the depth map.
As you can see from my track I didn't cover all the lake, but the mapping software interpolates to fill in the gaps. As SkunkedAgain noted, there might be some small structure that got missed because I didn't drive directly over it, but it does a pretty good job on the big picture. Also the two gaps on the depth map are caused because I did get close enough to either area.

you win my vote for BEST NEW MEMBER on the forum!
That's some great stuff, cool tools, handy software. Anyone could do it! (but you did, and you shared). It can be a tough lake to "read" with all the "weed", but my experience with it concurs. There may be pinpoints, and the factor of walls of weeds to play in and out of, but generally - very nicely done.
Are you familiar with the under-water-ski-course there? Not a myth.
And I don't know when, or how often, but I do believe they have cut a trench through the weeds from time to time. Gives the skiiers that "zone" across the deeper parts where they can fall in without SO much worry for the dreaded swimmers itch!
NOW - lets cap that lake and move onto some hard-deck actions I say! I'm ready!!!

Never heard of the underwater ski course. How do they cut the trench through the weeds? I want to see the underwater weed whacker! The trench should be easy to find with sonar after they cut it.
I am looking forward to putting the map to use once the lake freezes over. I will be the guy in a Shappell Wide House 5500 pop up. If you see me, come on over and say hi.

]. One thing you might keep in mind when you go to large reservoirs is to record the reservoir level when you are there. The technology is advancing so fast, the fish just don't stand a chance.[fishin]
