Year in Review 2014
#1
Well I looked at my fishing log and I guess my wife is right I do fish too much... Looks like I lucked into 69 trips so far this calendar year, now I do have to qualify that because I live close to Cutler and many of those trips were short run out on the river for an hour type trips... Total of 241.25 hours on the ponds with 552 fish for the year or 2.29 fish per hour average... Been a really good year for me, there were more skunked trips than I want to admit, but I also caught a few of my personal bests... Like I got my first wiper this year, caught a mack out of a 10,000 Ft lake that was 36" long, got a 29" catfish and was close to the top 5 in the catfish contest... Was a pretty good year, hope to do that again, but most likely won't so this may be my year to remember... Thanks for sharing it with me and helping me know what to do and try, I appreciate all the help that made a fun time... Thanks J

Really a nice year for you. I on the other hand didn't get out as much as I usually do. Hope to change that next year.

I hope you can get a chance to get out more next year. I know there are a lot of other responsibilities that need top billing and I probably didn't take as good of care of things as I should have. I'll have to be more conscious of them next year. But I hope to still spend sometime having fun. Later J

My list of why I wasn't able to got quite long starting with my wife having surgery, then family issues and finacial matters taking precedence. When I did get out it was usually on a family vacation/outing similar to last week. My shift at work will be changing after the first of the year and that may make it easier for me as well. I will have to see. I used to have mon-wed off and those were the best times for me to get out. Right now I have all weekend off and next month I am looking at sun-tues off.

Jeff, you are more diligent than me. I start off writing down all the fishing trips on my calendar but by mid Feb. I have pretty much forgotten.
I did have the opportunity to fish a couple of new places and that was great. I fished Lake Cascade in N.E. Idaho. last winter. and then in August we fished Canyon Ferry Res. in Montana near Helena. I had a great time both places...but the drive is terrible.

I'm with you. I was waaay down from my typical number of trips. Maybe that will be my resolution for the new year.[Tongue]

Sounds like you had a good year. I didn't get out as much as usual either, but I had some good days with the largemouth, a good day with the smallies and eyes, and a couple of productive days chasing trout in The Narrows. I can't complain. Time to make baits and flies and plan for next year.

Hope it works out for you to be able to get a chance to fish a little more. You know it's an addiction that you can't get enough of right? Be careful playing with the fire. But it sure can be a lot of fun too. Later J

Hey Gary I don't know if it was diligence or obsession, but I think I found a new way to do it that would work really well. Had a lesson in church a month or so ago about family / personal histories and they showed us an Ap. for the iphone that's called "Day One" it is really slick, you type in your story and add pictures and it organizes it by date location and puts it in a printable form that looks like I know what I'm doing. Anyway I've been using it more as a personal history, but since I have this addiction I've found it makes a great fishing log with pictures and its a lot better than my old spreadsheet. Instead of telling what I used I can just take a picture. Can also show other details as well much easier than I can describe them. I think this can make the chore of record keeping much easier and you get a better record. I'm still using my old spreadsheet but I don't get it updated as often as I should so maybe for the new year I need to switch over. At least my phone is with me at the time where my computer is at home. Oh and I heard the other phones have an ap like this as well but I don't remember the name. The scary part is the phone takes GPS locations so if your record falls into the wrong hands someone else will find your secret spots.

Anyway sorry got carried away there, I think your Cascade trip was one of the more memorable posts of the year on BFT. I don't remember ever seeing perch as big as you guys caught. How did they taste? Are they still good when they get King sized? I'm thinking the fillets would be so nice instead of the little dinky things I got last year. Most of mine weren't even big enough for bait. Sure hope you can get back out there soon I love your stories. hope to see ya on the hard deck this winter. Later J

Greg, I didn't follow the Idaho board as much as I usually do this year so I know I missed some of your reports which I hate to do because they are better than magazine articles. I love to study what you do. Did you mention where you found the eyes this year? If not, don't I was just curious. I had a very slow year for eyes. The only ones I caught were on Willard during the May/June hot streak. This is the first year Cutler shut me out on eyes. Don't know if the draining caused the problem or if I just wasn't in the right spot at the right time. Anyway I look forward to your reports next year. Later J

No such thing as fishing too much. Hopefully the wife doesn't add up your household honey do list hours! Skunks just teach you to fish better.

I find when I realize I might get skunked I start to freak out like when I used to take exams at college that I wasn't prepared for. I hate that feeling because I suddenly choke and can't even reach my regular level of proficiency. Oh by the way I went for a short one tonight and caught 4 fish and added one more trip and an hour and a half to the totals. Just carp and a 24" channel nothing too exciting. Later J

Well thanks [blush] Glad you like them.

The eyes were upstream a bit in the next reservoir up the pipe from Cutler. I didn't get any monsters, best was 21", but they were fun and aggressive. I picked up all of them while fishing suspending jerkbaits for smallmouth in September and October. Fun stuff. They were really whacking them.

Thanks Greg that does sound like fun. I didn't make it up there this year, but I have had fun in June after eyes in years gone by. I think I replaced that trip with Willard so I could get a wiper too. You still at the hospital? I've been up there a little too often lately with my MIL. Hopefully she makes it out before Christmas. Take care and Merry Christmas. J

Oneida is pretty fun. I like it in the fall because the water clears up quite a bit.

I am still at the hospital. My new job there has kept me very busy, hence the not getting out so much anymore. I'm just glad to finally have a couple of days off. Today was my last day in a string of 10 days. Blah.

I hope your MIL made it out of the hospital in time for the holiday and that you had a Merry Christmas [Smile]

Hey Greg, thanks for the well wish. Unfortunately we did spend a big chunk of today up in the hospital, but better there than the cemetary. I felt bad for all the health care workers up there missing the holiday with family, but I was greatful for the care they were providing to my MIL. Thanks for all you do in behalf of all us that benefit from it. Hope you get the chance to return to the ponds when you can. Later J

Well thank you, and you are certainly welcome. I'm sorry to hear that your MIL wasn't able to come home yet, but I hope that changes soon.
