Frustrating Ice Situation
#1
Really? RAINING in the middle of January in Cache Valley! As if the ice on Hyrum and surrounding areas wasn't borderline enough just from the temps! Now here comes mother nature to RAIN ...salt on the wound! Just had to gripe. Hyrum HAD 4" of clear ice Saturday, after today, I'd hate to even guess!....*breathes deep*...okay, i'll try to calm down now.

Been ice fishing since 00-01 and never had a season like this. So limited on lakes to fish. Crazy.

Heh, I'm with you. It's been raining steadily since last night in Provo. Not only does Utah valley not get rain in January, we don't even get rain this long lasting EVER. It's usually a 20 minute spurt and then dry again.

Ah, well. It's my first ice season and I've found time to go that lined up with time when there was safe ice somewhere close by exactly one time so far, but at least it was a great trip and I took home some white bass to make into tacos Big Grin

I'm having such a hard time getting into this winter. I find myself dreaming about/feverishly planning my high Uinta backpacking trip for the summer... here's hoping 2015 is the year I get me a golden trout Big Grin

I feel your pain. The marginal ice that is out there is pretty crowded with people. I'm not fond of cold swims so I am just working on the boat to pass the time. This could be the shortest ice fishing season I have ever seen. But on the bright side at least we are getting some much needed water.[:/]

I fished today on 5.5"-6" of clear ice, started at 7:30am this morning, and stayed until 5:15pm. Pineview. It rained a bit, but it turned to snow, we got wet but the ice did not shrink at all while we were out there. We kept checking all day. The snow that had melted and refroze on the surface was a little slushy but not deeper than 1/2". It takes a heck of a lot to kill clear hard ice. Don't count this season out yet, as long as we stay in the 20s or below at night we are good.

HAHA... sorry man, we're just gittin started, this is just the annual and very regular January thaw, it literally happens pretty much every year. Everyone forgets about it and starts biting their fingernails like its the end of the world. ARGH! Damn global warming (shakes fist in the air) LOL. We still have all of February. I to am excited for ice out trout. But... all in due time.

Yes, it's an odd winter. My theory while driving through fog and rain this morning was "electronic fog" strayed from the Bermuda Triangle and created a portal for me to transport through time into April. But, that's just silly, so I've decided The Borg must have scooped up Utah and placed it on top of Louisiana. What else could it be! I hope we have good ice for the Fish Lake yellow perch tournament.
