North End Mirror Lake Hwy
#1
Planning a scout camp/cabin trip to the north side of the Mirror Lake highway. I haven't ever tried a winter trip to this area, so I'm not familiar with possible fishing locations nearby. What can you tell me? Should I take my gear or forget it and just ski and sled? Also I seen Sulfer Creek on the map in Wyoming, what can you tell me about that, would it be worth buying out of state permits for the boys? Thanks for your help. J

I've ice fished it several times in the past. Not this year though. It was always good for 12-15" rainbows on worms or ice flies tipped with mealworms. I've never tried it in summer for some reason, but it always produced when we ice fished it.

Mike was that for Sulfer Creek? Appreciate that info. Thanks J

Ya, I'm thinking of sulphur creek. The lake in wyoming on the way to the uintas just outside of Evanston. I've always been on my way to cooler lakes in the uintas in summer so I never fished it then, but its been good to me in winter whenever I fished it. I think there might even be an ice fishing tournament there every year, but I could be mistaken. Definitely worth hitting, but the uinta lakes are a snomobile back country trip. I fished Whitney lake before through the ice and it was an adventure just getting there, but the fishing was good once we were there.

Jeff, Sulphur Creek is iced up and safe. Lots of 14 to 16 in rainbows being caught earlier, also has a few walleyes in there but not many people catching them. Check the Wyo. board for info, been some posts on there.
Highway 150 is closed at the Bear River Lodge. The only Lake close to that is Lily lake and I know nothing about fishing there. There is the Bear River, but probably skiing and sledding would be more fun for the kids.

Sulphur has walleye and smallies if you get the itch to try for some warm water species.

Hardly anybody targets them at all. I think if more people actually tried they'd catch a few of both.

Thanks Mike,
Sort of a different spot for me to try ice fishing.. Guess I usually stick close to home or head to Idaho, since those areas are closer for me... Anyway had a couple boys ask about ice fishing there and so I thought I'd check it out so I knew what to tell them during planning tonight... Thanks J

Thanks Gary,
Great tips from a local, sure appreciate them... I'm thinking probably skip Sulphur since the permits would eat up most of our budget... Agree with you about the Bear River being a little tougher fishing than the boys would probably enjoy... However, Lily lake still has me a little interested, it's kind of close to the cabin and if we can get into there this time of year it might be fun... We have a couple snowmobiles and skis so I think with enough trips we could get everyone in there... Anyone know how deep the snow is up that way? Thank you for the great info.. and hope you're getting to feel well enough for the cisco disco... Can't believe it's only a week out now... See ya then... J

Hey Jeff, there is also Whitney(sp?) Res. you would likely need a snowmobile to get in there, same with Lily lake but Lily is such a high elev lake it might be tough to get to in the Winter, depending on the snow depth.

If it was just me, I'd be all over trying to catch an eye through the ice. Not sure how I would fish for them. Well I know I'd try a 4" curly tail jig tipped with something tasty right off the bottom, but I don't know if I'd ever catch anything with that approach. Thanks so much for the great info. Wish I could try it, but I don't think I'll get the time to try anything new this trip. Later J

Curt, are my map reading skills bad? I thought from Google maps that Lily lake looked like the easiest to get to. I know nothing about either of these two lakes you mention. I definitely don't want to be digging down 5' to find the ice to start drilling. I didn't see Whitney on the map is it close to the same area? I have heard that lake has lots of fish in the summer. Thanks for the heads up. J

Unless there are two lily lakes, you will find that the one near the cabin there at Carter creek camp ground(think that is the name of the camp ground), is very high elevation 10,000'. It might be closer but IMO I would not fish it in the Winter because the ice will likely be very thick but that being said, I really have no idea how thick the ice will be at Whitney res but because it is at a lower elev, it likely won't be a thick and getting there will be easier. Whitney is down the road from the camp ground, heading toward Mirror lake, on the West side of the road. What I don't know is if Whitney is past the area that is closed in the Winter and if you can go past the road where it is closed on a snowmobile but if it were me I'd called the forest service and ask them. Here is a link to a map of Whitney res.

OK, I just got off the phone with the Forest service and in case you want to talk to them their number is 307-789-3194. What I found out was that the name of the lake that is closest to Carter creek camp ground(CG) is Lyman lake and it is at the top of Elizabeth mountain. The lady I talked to said that even thought it is higher elev it had a better carry over of the fish because the lake is deeper than Whitney. I guess Whitney gets drawn down in the Fall because of irrigation demands. With lower water the fish do not do as well in the Winter but there could still be fish in it. The distance from Carter creek(CG) to Whitney is about 14 miles and the road to it is groomed and open. The road to Lyman is also open and groomed and the distance is 9 or 10 miles from Carter creek CG. Hope that helps.

Wow Curt thanks for the great homework on this... I need to figure out where Carter creek is at for sure, because the Lily lake I'm looking at seems to be lower in elevation than Whitney... It is not nearly as far uphill on the highway as Whitney Res... Not sure it has any fish in it, but it does look close to the cabin... Now I think I heard that Lyman lake can be good, but is it on private property? thanks for the great research... J

We ice fished Whittney two years ago and had a blast!! We caught mostly small fish but a lot of them, my son did catch a nice 20" fat bow for the big fish of the day. The road was groomed 90% of the way. We slept in a cabin at Bear River and then fished Sulpher on our way home, it was kinda slow but we did manage several decent bows.

I don't have any other info than what I saw, but I believe that Lily lake is fishless. I actually went there a few months ago and it looked lifeless and shallow. Beautiful lake though which is why I went. I also thought I read somewhere that it wasn't stocked but I could be wrong. I don't know the area well, but there are some other lakes a little further around there that I would try before even considering going to Lily for fishing. If there is no stocking record, I am sure there are no fish in it as it seems too shallow for holdovers.

Okay it appears there are two Lilly lakes off mirror lake highway. One is at 10,000' the other one at 8900' on the north slope very close to where the Bear River Lodge is. Which one were you talking about? Also the web says there are brooks and bows in Lilly Lake but it didn't say which one. So now I'm Confused. If I try it I would try the closest lake to the lodge, but if there aren't any fish I won't take the gear. Thank you for the info. J

Jeff, I think your best bet is to call that number tomorrow, from what that lady told me Lily does not hold any fish, unless it is a different lake, she said Lily was down that same mirror lake highway road past the area that is closed during the winter except for snowmobiles. The way she told me it sounded like it was almost as far as Whitney Res. Sounds like the place you are talking about is along the Bear river and if it is, it might be a private pond or lake[:/].

I was at the one closest to the lodge, I think. I picked it because I didn't want to drive far from the lodge. AFter I posted my previous response, I read on the DWR stocking report that they had stocked fish in both Lilly and Lily. Not sure if there is another lily because I read somewhere there were no fish in Lily and I also didn't see any life there when I went (not a good prediction if there really is fish, but the lake seemed really shallow). I only fished for 15 minutes so that wasn't the best predictor either. Overall, I wouldn't make a trip their for fishing. It was the easiest place for me to access by car, but by snowmobile there are others that can be accessed.
