Hyrum
#1
I hit Hyrum yesterday . Ice was about 4-5 inchs. But making alot of noise. We couldn't keep them baby perch off are line. I dont think we caught one over 6 inchs. Also caught a few planter rainbows. It was a fast bite. If you like catching small perch. We moved around quite a bit and couldn't seem to get away from them.
And if you plan on going. I think its worth it to pay. That hill at big toe is a bugger with a full sled.

Nice job Woody! At least you got some perch. Hopefully there are some bigger ones in there. Perch are kinda funny in that lake, at least they're trying to make another comeback.

And yes, Big Toe is a pain to ascend with a sled. If I ever go that way, i'll carry my tent on my back like a backpack...hate taking my sled down and back up that hill.

Ok, just spent 3 hours on Hyrum (from 3-6:00 pm) today (friday)....The ice was a decent 4-5..maybe 6" in places. It was very slick, and the top 1/4- 1/2" was foggy and junk! Other than that, it felt plenty safe (ignore all the crack lines though...[:/] ) The shore line was still sustainable, but brittle..however that is only the case in about 4-5" inch deep water, so no worries. The fishing was slower, mostly young perch and a nice trout that escaped before we could come face to face. The temp felt dramatically colder when we headed off the ice, so no doubt there will be more freeze....So while they ice may not be perfect with its consistency, it seemed plenty strong....There were about 20 others out there, with a cluster off big toe, and the beach area, as well as some further up near the main entrance area.

Wow, I would never attempt a sled at Big Toe lol. I can barely make it up and down with a backpack and drill. lol. Some years I put on the ice claws on the boots just to even get a footing at all. Good job making it up the hill like that lol. That is a killa hike there.

You would think .That i would have learned. After last year about that hill. I slipped and fell.Down the hill into the trees. It was solid ice . Ended up breaking 3 ribs. Me and my buddy. Had a hard time pulling the sled so we tried lifting it. And of course I couldn't catch myself when I fell. I layed there for probably 20 min. Thought they were gunna have to bring in the chopper to get me out . But i finally got my breath back. And was able to struggle back to the car. 2 weeks off work and months of pain. And i go back. Guess you gotta love the game.

Wooow! I always thought that hill was downrite dangerous but 3 broken ribs! Geez! Be careful there! Yeah I fish 2in of ice feeling totally secure at UL and I never need cleats on any ice no matter how slippery except if I know if there is going to be any incline…….incline is deadly. Had to get on my knees one time when the ice pushed up an inclined sheet at pine view once. The sole of the boots just wouldn't take hold no matter what. Even all fours it was tough. lol. That's why I always break out the claws of death cleats whenever I try that big toe. I know damn well I won't make it up or down. The deadliest fishing trail anywhere. Even when snow free you still have to watch your step. The little spring coil cleats won't do anything that steep. Have to get the ones that look like great white shark canines shaped into a star. Even then I stomp them into each step like a tree or ice climber. That place is a huge shortcut but it depends on what you want to risk lol.

Dang Wombat, that sounds brutal! My worst experience ever at Hyrum started ON the ice below big toe hill...Just finished drilling my 4th hole to get the family started for the day. The ice was clear and slick. i set the auger down on the ice, took 2 steps and fell like a ton of bricks on my back, and without knowing, my left had SLAMMED down, with the fleshy part of my hand palm area just above my thumb hit the auger blade. The sight was gory! The pain was bad! I could only use my neck warmer to press tightly against the wound and stop the bleeding AND i had to hold it above my head or the pain and throbbing killed. So with my two hands clinched above my head I had to walk back up that ice-packed hill, while my fam gathered up everything to meet me that truck and take me to the ER. Needless to say the walk up that blasted hill for me under those circumstances. was brutal...Slipped several times, all while trying to keep my hands high....as much as i cursed the accident, I cursed the hill!! lol But 32 stitches later I was ok! [cool]

But of course right after that, my wife was convinced that suddenly ice fishing was right up there Bearing Sea Crabbing as one of the most dangerous things a person could do! lol....
