Pole on Ice quality
#1
I am finally getting tired of not fishing due to the lack of good quality ice. I have a few places I would like to try and I am wondering about the quality of ice at each. If anyone happens to know and would like to advise.

Mantua
Hyrum
Willard bay (after hearing reports of thickening ice from DWR)
Strawberry
and possibly starvation.

I care more about the quality of the ice than the quality of the fishing

[#800000]I know of no yardstick by which the 'quality' of ice can be measured. However, there are many tables listing measurements needed to determine what is 'safe' ice. Of the reservoirs you listed, Mantua and Strawberry are covered with 'safe' ice for individual foot traffic. It would appear that Strawberry is also safe for OHV use. From the reports already posted, it would appear that Hyrum is also safe for foot traffic. Willard Bay and Starvation are an unknown at this point due to a paucity of reliable reports thus far. I would gently suggest you read through the already posted reports (there are many) for the bodies of water you are curious about.[/#800000]

I think many of these places have been discussed in threads just below this one, many within the last 24 hours. Speaking 1st hand about Hyrum..spent the day there today and last night..about 5-6 inches of ice, saw an ATV out cruising and about 100 people fishing out there.

Was at Strawberry Chicken Creek East this morning. Ice was 6 or 7 inches at about 150-200 yds from shore. Fishing was slow in 25' of water, we did catch a few though.
