Survived the Yuba trip
#1
As some of you know me and the boys hit Yuba for the weekend. The temps were awsome. The lake looks fully capped form the campground side. we did not venture out as there were a lot of cracks with a lot of water seeping up on them in the day time. Talked to a few guys fishing down right near the spill way I know they had been there for several hours and had not caught anything. They said the ice was about 4 inches, but they seam to be hugging the shore line and not going much more than 10-15 yds form the damn. We just pretty much enjoyed the warm weather and spent a bunch of time out in the desert. Are trip was a big success how ever I am thinking if it does not really start getting cold for much longer periods of time the lower lakes are never going to get much more ice and the fishing will stay slow until Ice off. I did not get any good pics of the lake sorry.

Just to mention if you do go out near the dam there was a very large hole of open water about 75 yds out. I do not sure if it was just a flooded area or not but it was about 15yd across

Good luck and happy fishing

I kind of remember seeing that hole last year. It is probably a warm spring of some sorts but I am unsure. It Sad to hear of very slow reports from Yuba the last year or so. Hopefully that will change...

Thanks for the report

thanks for the up date that open ice hole is where the water goes through the dam . I don't think it will get cold enough to freeze real good this year [frown]

Here is a few pics of my Yuba trip last Saturday. We fished the Narrows 6 hrs and one big skunk. Still beautiful day.

As long as you guys had fun, that's the important part. The weather isn't great for ice fishing but if you're hanging out it's tough to beat for January.

[Smile]The second photo looks like you made a way to catch fish from pvc pipe. How did you build a way for the line to release the pole?

Thank you!

Its actually my buddies invention. The end of pvc pipe has a bolt with a circle on top and he bent a piece of metal that hooks you end eyelet and a trigger you put your line over. I will look and see if I have a better picture of the trigger part. He's a lot smarter than me.

[Smile]danielc,
Thanks for checking to see if you have a photo of a close up of the trigger mechanism. I would like to make me one.

Thank you for your help!

Here it is pretty simple but works great we used them last year. Only problem is we didn't put anything to adjust for length. The one I got works great with most my poles. The hook that you put in your tip you have to play around with it until its just right I even sanded it down a bit

[Smile]Danielc,
The photo makes complete sense to me. I need to make one long enough to hold my 3' 6" pole. Most ice poles are about 2 feet. Thank you for taking the time to take the photo and share.

Several variations can be found online, just do search for DIY auto fisherman or DIY jawjacker. Never having used or built one, my guess is the key is portability, sensitivity, and ability to remain unaffected by temperature.

Best of luck
