Drowning near Lost Dog
#1
Just heard the news that someone fell through the ice near Lost Dog at the Gorge today. They haven't released any info on gender age or ID but unfortunately they did say that the scuba recovery team will be starting their search tomorrow AM.

With the Burbot Bash coming up on this weekend and all this strange weather please make sure that you are over prepared for worst case scenarios and that you are double checking the ice safety. Just a few years ago at the bash when I was still new on bft some guys on here got caught on a slab of ice that broke off and got sucked out to the main body of the lake and had to be rescued, and that was just a wind shift. The Gorge is one of those places that should always be respected. Please be safe out there everyone! And to the family and friends of whoever fell through today, God bless. My thoughts and prayers are with you.

Its never a good thing to hear that kind of news.
Please be safe so we dont hear any more stories.

Remember this weekend to ensure proper ventilation when using heaters.

Amen! So Sad to hear of these tragedies. Having had a couple of close calls myself over the years and in light of this years weather already..I hope everyone adheres to the advice given on being prepared...OVERLY prepared! Have ice spikes handy around your neck. Carefully examine ice in and around your desired location. Have rope on or near you at all times while on the ice....Sometimes its easy to check out the conditions initially and then forget about them once we think they are safe. With wind and temps, these conditions can and do change by the hour! Do not become complacent, but stay vigilant about examining your surroundings carefully throughout the day.

One year at Mantua (the LAST of that ice season)...we made it out spent 5 hours. We paid no attention to the conditions. Finally we looked up and realized that me and my buddy were the only ones left out there. Granted, Mantua is not huge and full of channels and super deep, but same lessons apply...We watched a black lab go through the ice about 25 feet from the shoreline that we entered in on! Luckily he made it back out to his owner on the shore. Long story short, my buddy and I barely made it back after a ton of walking and figuring out semi-safe crossing that involved using the sled and rope, 1 person at a time to get back to land...looking back, that day was warm and windy....Bottom line, always be looking at the conditions of the weather and how it impacts the ice!

This is the news report I saw. Figured all the big news stations would have picked it up by now.
