Fishlake ice?
#1
Any updates on the Ice on fishlake?

We were thinking of doing the burbot bash but with the bad ice conditions are considering going to fish lake instead.

Thanks in advance.[fishon]

A good friend took his boys down there last Saturday. He initially took his 4 wheeler out, but very quickly decided to take it back to the truck. It was okay, but he didn't want to go out to far. Someone else said they saw a side by side, way out, and figured they were nuts. It was just 3 to 4 inches where my friend was. There were a lot of people, everywhere. They caught a pile of perch and a few nice trout. His brother went back Monday, and didn't do as well in the catching department.

I fished the south end Monday. Solid 9 inches of ice in the south end's older ice. I didn't go out onto the newer ice, which was 4 inches the week before, and probably closer to 6 or 7 now.

The nice thing is that the wind has blown a layer of snow on the ice, which has bonded sufficiently to the ice to give traction. The week before it was very slippery. Monday it was easy to walk.

The perch would take anything. I caught as many perch on 3 inch salt/pepper tubes as I did on small offerings. With the three poles in the water, if someone wasn't getting a nibble after 30 seconds time, it was considered a "lull" in the action.

ATVs, UTVs, and snowmobiles all have taken trips across to the far side across the older ice on the south. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought off-road vehicles were prohibited in the area. No?

Off-road vehicles are prohibited to "designated" roads only, as far as my understanding. There are no regulations concerning them on the ice. Just be safe as you approach the north end with a machine, if there is any lake with varying ice depth Fish Lake would be at the top of the list!

Would you say it's safe enough to walk to the
Other side from Joe bush?

Catcherman, I measured the ice thickness at Joe Bush yesterday, Jan 20th. The frost colored ice was 4 inches thick, the clear ice, between Joe Bush and the east shore was 2" deep and I would bet you less than 2", the further east you go. One week ago the area your talking about crossing was open water.

I would hope, beg, plead, that no one, for any reason, go out on to the clear ice at Fish Lake until we have a lot more cold nights than we've had thus far. It's a very unusual year and I do not believe the ice in the center of Fish Lake is safe, at this time.

Thanks doggonefishin, we are sure going to give it a try. I think I will be a lot of fun for all of families with their kids a long with a lot of guys that have been wanting to get out and catch a few fish this winter.

We sure having a lot more interest than we'd ever anticipated but that's a good thing. If we can remove a bunch of perch from the lake, get the folks out for a fun day on the mountain and get everyone home safe, it will be worth the effort.

Looking forward to it, with all the anxiety associated with these kinds events, especially, when we do one for first time. If it goes well and we decide to do it again next year, we'll all be more prepared after having done this one. We're just kind of feeling our way along, as we go, right now but it seems to be coming together fairly well, so we'll do the best we can and hope the folks that come out have a good time and come back to Fish Lake to catch perch again, in the future.

I spoke to someone at Fish Lake Resorts yesterday and she confirmed atv's & snowmobiles are allowed on the ice. However , like in other reports she did not know if it was safe enough to take them out now. The only area she thought was safe was the south end ONLY! Drill before venturing out to far and be safe!
