Is this a dumb idea?

Real question:

I like fishing for trout with spinners, especially in rivers and streams. I've had some decent luck catching browns out of the Lower Provo with Blue Foxes and Panther Martins. Most of my luck has come during spawning season.

I wonder what would happen if I were to thread a red bead onto the main line before the spinner. The idea being it kind of looks like a minnow or some other critter chasing down an egg. I know the browns get real agitated during spawning season; I'm assuming that has something to do with protecting the eggs.

Is this idea based on bad theory, or do you think it could improve my strike percentage?

definitely wouldn't hurt to try. my favorite spinner to use on the lower is the yellow Panther Martin with red spots.

I've lost two of those on the Lower Provo I'm not speaking from volumes of experience since I've only fished there one season, but seems like the browns go after the plain gold Vibrax and the brookies are more likely to hit the yellow w/ red spots Panther Martin with the silver blade.

The 2 or 4 PMRG was always the go to on the Provo. I used to have a tackle shop in the Riverside Plaza shopping center. Would fish the river from the DI bridge up stream to the diversion at the BYU Movie Studio. Normal flows allowed the 2 or 4 to work down into the undercuts and runs. I High spring flows, I would go up to the 1/2 oz. one. Black with red dots or black with yellow, didn't seem to matter.

It's not a dumb idea. Many fish are attracted to red, and there are lures that use very little more than a colored bead to attract bites.

Look up fly patterns like an egg sucking leech, muddler minnow etc. What you are proposing is that exact same idea.

My only concern for this idea is if the bead will interfere with the action of your lure. OR if the additional weight of the bead will pull your lure down into snags.

But it would be worth experimenting in my opinion.
