Strawberry - Any chance of an ice cold koke?
#1
I usually prefer chilled Pepsi products, but I am getting a craving for and ice cold koke or two...particularly with a Strawberry twist.

I have been searching old posts for reports of people who successfully targeted kokanee salmon through the ice at Strawberry. I am either not looking in the right spot or there haven't been many posts on the subject. I've seen videos on YouTube of people catching quite a few kokes at Causey and elsewhere in Idaho, but not any that mention the Berry. Are there areas and depths that are more likely to produce the tasty little buggers, or do people just catch the occasional one while fishing for cutts and bows?

I'm heading to Strawberry with some buddies [my first time in 10 years] and personally I'd like to catch a limit of kokanee and then spend the rest of the day fishing for trout. This keeps me from being tempted to keep a slot-buster because....hey, I've already got salmon.

Any tips, locations for kokanee or cutthroats would be greatly appreciated! No need to give me the GPS coordinates to your favorite spot. General info would do, like Chicken Creek area in 20 FOW, etc. Unless you're feeling extra generous with the GPS locations, then you could send me a PM!!![Wink]

Really...I'm just looking for something to help avoid the skunk. It sucks to drive that far just to come home and take a tomato juice bath just to get rid of the smell.

I have never caught them through the ice but we used to catch them out of the boat in chicken creek east and by the ladders. It's been a few years though. Don't know if that helps any. Hope you at least get into something!

I have caught a few on the SC side while fishing for trout. I have generally been fishing deep water (70 FOW) and schools come through 10 feet below the ice. I think the problem being very few guys fish deep water. Most folks like to fish the shoreline in water < 40 feet.

In the summer, the majority of the kokes are out in the middle of the reservoir I suspect they are there as well in the winter. That reservoir has a lot of deep water & it would be pure luck to set up over a school or have a school swim through.

Having said this, last winter there were a few kokes being caught through the ice & being reported on this site. This resulted in a phenomenal season last summer. I do not recall anyone pulling a koke through the ice this season. Hope this is not a sign of what the summer is going to be like?

I've never fished for them thru the ice, but I have in the summer at strawberry and soldier creek side. I've done way better on S.C. side north from the aspen grove boat ramp.

I iced 2 last yr at Chicken Creek East. in about 20-25' water. Was not targeting them but gladly invited them home for dinner. Smile

Caught them on Pink Ratfinkies both times.

Good luck!
