Unstable ice, falling rocks at Causey and Pineview!!!

First hit Causey reservoir around 7 or 8 am. only about 1 ft open gap. One you punch a hole all of the surface water starting going in a cycle. If you go take the road up pass the dam be careful because there's tons of 2-3' boulder rocks on the road and they're still coming down. Not a single nibble.

Later decided to hit pineview and it looks like the warm weather is really eating the lake up. I first went to Cemetary point. Luckily there was a big wooden step board that I could cross safely. The pressure crack on the north side was 2" at 11am but when I left at 3pm it was about 8" wide. Check out the port ramp and all I can say good luck getting on the ice there. You would literately need a 12' sturdy and wide wood to cross it. Hit the south side by the dam area in a pull off took a long hike on the sketcy rocks just to find some stable shore ice. Come of the areas I saw had decent amount of open water mainly south east side.

I'd be guessing in 1 - 1 1/2 month till Pineview will open up unless if a cold snap come out of no where.

Fishing wasn't great but caught 2 mudders and about 10 or so crappie. Bites are extremely light that you really need a foam bobber cut extremely short and I'm sure not going to rolling the dice to go back there again anytime soon.

how thick was the ice, when you got on it?

At pineview the white ice is about 1-3" the clear ice is 7-8" and for causey once you get on the ice it's 8" thick but sure sucks having that water cycle basically filling up your hole with ice shreds.

Cleats are a total must and if you cross over a pressure crack it will expand within a few hrs.

Was there a lot of slush on the ice at Causey or was that where you were talking about it being slick? So you never went to the area in front of the dam? Just wondering if that area is also about a ft of open water as well before good ice. I'm thinking it is colder up there so the ice would be in better shape[:/].

It's slick with 1/2-1" of water on top for the most part a few spots had hard pack ice.

I fish the south side. Was going to fish by the dam and cliff rocks but the only area with snow would of been the parking lot a little down south.

OK, I see, so you are saying there was no snow going down the rocks at the dam, is that right?

There was no snow even two weeks ago going down the trail to the dam on north side. Ice was thick as hell then and no open water edge at all by the dam but water at cemetery edge. I'm sure cemetery is not accessible now and dam has open water edge.

So in this pic I have an A and B, You went down to fish at the A access point, is that correct?
The B access point is where I usually go down, did you notice if there was any snow there? It is in the shade a little more there, so I was thinking there might be some snow left there[:/].

Just got back from Pineview and the edges are gone. I was hoping to get on this weekend after reading your report but I guess that is not going to happen. Saw where you got on the ice and drilled your holes. The best edges were about 3 to 4 ft out but that is just looking, the worse edges were 20 to 30 ft of open water before the ice. Never went up to Causey after seeing what the View looked like[].

Ya it's sure a depressing ice season this year []. Bought a new ice tent, ice auger, rods, reels, and I barely was able to use it this year.
