It's been a tradition to take my little girl ice fishing for her birthday (next week). We've been going since her second birthday (she's turning 7 next week), and she looks forward to it every year. We usually target perch as they are her/our favorite to eat, but it looks like ice fishing isn't going to be a good idea this year so now I'm looking for other ideas. Sounds like Deer Creek is an option for some trout, but are there any reports on whities at UL? We're also very fond of those too. Any open water at the harbors? Any other suggestions?
Thanks,
Jeff

You will find plenty of open wate at U.L. but its hit or miss on the whities this time of year. If you hit a spot where a school is in it can be good, however they aren't easy to pinpoint this time of year. You could hit a harbor like Provo that has a river running into the lake. Who knows maybe you will hit the right spot at the right time. Good luck with the little one and let us know where you go and how you do.

The whities are still around in Provo Harbor, though not in large numbers. Seems like tiny orange ice flies are the best ticket, although at AF harbor I had luck with slightly larger chartreuese leadheads. Tip whatever you're using with waxies or white gulp! maggots.
If you're looking for fast action to make the trip more fun for her, I recommend maybe driving a bit further and going to fish lake. You'll do much better for perch there too.

Thanks for the ideas. Fish Lake had crossed my mind...I've always wanted to go load up on perch down there. My wife loves perch, so we may be able to sell her on the idea....
Thanks for the tip about Provo Harbor. Is it still iced in then? Fishing sketchy ice from the docs?
Thanks again,
Jeff

I haven't been there for like two weeks, sorry for outdated info. Even there I didn't feel comfortable walking on the ice, so we sat on the docks and drilled through. Slow fishing, but it was so warm that it was still lots of fun. Both my fiancee and I ended up taking our coats off because it was so sunny.
