Benson Marina Saturday
#1
Needed to check out the depth and conditions up on Benson, see if I could luck into any Cats. Got to the water about 9 AM. The docks were not in the water yet, but was able to launch, beach, park rig, and push off the sand without too much effort. Fished up and down the west side of the marina area, near the highway bridge, crossed under the bridge and went all the way to the old train trestle in the south east corner. Ran (slowly) up the east bank of the marina towards Muddy Road Outfitters, but was getting late and wind was coming up, so called it a day about 2:30 PM Caught lots of 6 to 10 inch Mud Cats. Started seeing Carp jumping and slapping, but no joy on and Channel Cats this trip. Water depth is about what I had expected, 2 feet to 5 feet in and around the marina areas. 14-16 feet over the hole near the bridge. Other depths variable and require close eye on your sonar and keep the motor up. Except for no catch to speak of (didn't even photo the Mudders) wasn't a bad day.

That is one body of water that I am clueless on. Looks like lots of water though.

Tin Can! Looks like you and I fish the same general areas. I too, was out there this weekend and nada, nil, zip on the Channel Front. (I'm wondering if the back to back years of the draw-down has had an effect).Lots of bigger sized mud cats if you're into that sort of thing...and one big 'ol nasty ugly carp that kinda reminded me of my ex-girlfriend from back in the day. It measured 26" so it was hefty; and I was a little disappointed that it wasn't our elusive Channel variety.

For weeks now I've been saying that water temp needs to warm up for those kitties to become more active. Sure, folks will hook into one here and there if their bait happens to float by their whiskers. But on the bright side, I think we're getting real close to Channel Activity.

I agree that we are a bit on the early side of serious cattin'. I've caught about a half dozen cats, one good one. All of them have come in to the net doing a slow twist with no fight at all. A summer time cat can really give a good showing for himself when the temps are right.

Water temp on UL today reached 54 degrees so we are getting there. Ten more degrees and action will really pick up.

The best is yet to come.
