Pineview ?
#1
Has anyone heard about the conditions up at Pineview. I am thinking about taking my wife up there for her first ice fishing trip.

Go to Rockport. Pineview sucks this year. There's been very few positive reports about Pineview this year.

Lost Creek is another place to think about. Though, the access might be less than stellar.

Last week Pineview had a foot of slush on maybe 6" of ice with some spots breaking thru . I got all wet and caught nothing . Lots of snow too . It may have froze up this week .

H69 et al,

I was up this morning. 12" of ice, no slush, 5" of powder on top of the ice. Solid around the edges. . The fishing was nonexistant. Marked lots, caught none. Same story all over the south arm. The few guys I talked to said the same thing. I didn't see a single fish come through the ice in 5 hours. Even walked over to my good spot and couldn't catch a cold. I'll try it mid-week next week and report.

The last time I went up to pineview for the summer was in late sept, and the water was WAY down. Is it still as low as it was??

I haven't been to rockport yet but Echo is fast action for 4-8 inch perch with the occasional trout I think either one of these lakes would be better than pineview this year.

I watched Doug Miller last night because he had a report on Pineview perch. according to his source from DWR the perch have a natural cycle of high and low population from year to year. This makes sense to me by the way perch numbers seem to change at other reserviors from year to year also. The report said nothing about the muskies being a factor. I am happy to hear this because I see both fish as a good thing for angling opportunities. But I hope that the perch make a fast come back because Pine View is a favorite fishing hole for me. I will miss the opportunity to take the grandkids there this year. I also have seen the same high and low years for crappie at Pine View.I hope that this spring will be good for the crappie while the perch rebound.DKSRenegade

I don't think them perchies and crappies up at pineview are coming back. It used to be that the crappies would run in, and you could catch anywhere from 20-200 a day. One day about 8 years ago, my dad, uncle and I caught and released over 1,000 crappies in one day. These last couple of years, the only crappie I've caught in there were about 5 inches long. The perch are WAY down, too. Just 2 years ago, I could go up there in any bay and catch 25 perch an hour. I'm wondering if there's a disease in there or something like that. I don't wana think its the muskie's fault, but that is also a definate posibility. Lets just hope that they do bounce back up and create a really heathy fishery.

I'm no fish biologist, heck I can't even spell it. Here's what I've observed over the last 9 years I've fished Pineview and other Perch/Crappie waters. About every 5 years the populations boom, then bust. I knew this would be a bad Perch and Crappie year from what I saw last year. Last winter I didn't catch the numbers of Perch/Crappie I usually get, but the ones I got were big. This spring the Crappie were huge. I got some that were 18" and about 4 pounds. The Perch I got averaged 10", with a few over 13". This told me at least one or two year classes of those fish were absent or at least minimal in the lake. This leaves more feed for the other fish, letting them get bigger. This will be a bad year, next year too. The fish we get will be big however. Here is what I believe, remember this is not based in fact, just an observation from a fisherman.

There are three year classes of Perch and Crappie in Pineview. There is a class that is 6 years old. Though very small in numbers, these are the biggest of the fish. These are the hosses of them and aren't stupid, They've avoided us and the Muskys so far. You'll have to work to get these.

There is a three year old class of fish. These are the 7 inchers. There aren't as many as in the past the fish will grow fast and get big. In one more year these fish will be like last years fish.

There is this years class. Lots of them. From what I've seen, this was a good breeding year for Perch, I don't know about Crappie yet. In three years these fish will go 5-7 inches like the Pineview of old. There will be lots for two years, then for one year, there won't be as many but they will be 8". Then for the last year they will be 10" again and few.

All lakes are different, it appears Hyrum cycles every 6 years and Echo never runs out of small Perch. Rockports on a 4 year cycle (this is the last of the up years, enjoy it while you can).

I don't profess to know everyting (O.K. I do), but if there are any biologists out there let me know how far off I am. Hope this at least gives you hope for the future of Pineview.

Just look on the bright side. Those Musky will be so hungry this spring that they can't afford to be picky. Sounds like a fun ice off to me. Just hope they don't get to skinny. I guess they can always start munching the carp and mudcats that would be a good thing also.
