Fishing trip help
#1
Hey guys. I'll be taking a trip to salt lake at the end of May and would love to fish at some point when there.
I used to fish off a dock all the time when I was younger on a lake and would love something like that. Doesn't have to be anything big/crazy.
Just looking for a relaxing time to share with my girlfriend.
If there's anything within an hour or so of the city that would be great. But I'll still take any suggestions! Thanks.

There are several waters, you will be pleasantly surprised I think. Strawberry Reservoir is an hour and 15 minutes and is probably a good choice because it has a lot of fish, is a very scenic drive and is "wife friendly" with ample services. I would suggest calling ahead and renting a boat for a half day or full. They rent smaller pontoon boats that are safe and comfortable. Trolling jerk baits or fishing power bait are both effective. The fish out of this lake are delicious too. Good luck!

Hi, first off I welcome to BFT! Next I need to ask what species do you want to catch? That will help us send you to the right body of water. Third where are you from?

If you are dunking bait, Strawberry would be great at that time, also it is beautiful up there. East Canyon is close as is Lost Creek, if throwing spinners or lures Little Dell is as close as they come.

Thanks for the responses! I'm from NY. Not looking to catch anything specific or keep anything. Looking for some good scenery, hopefully nothing too crowded, and to just drop our lines and hang out.

Also, do you need any sort of permit or anything to fish at these spots?

You will need to purchase a non-resident fishing license.

This time of year, one of the easiest places to catch fish is in Utah Lake, which is about 30 miles south of Salt Lake City. You should easily be able to catch white perch and largemouth bass from shore, and if interested, huge carp and catfish and if you're really lucky, walleye. Utah Lake is a huge lake, but there is plenty of access for this type of fishing. It can get crowded on the weekends, but if you go during the week, it's usually pretty easy to get a spot to yourself on a dike, which is where the fish are.

If scenery is what you're looking for, then this may not be the place for you. I'd stick with some of the other recommendations on the page. Tibble Fork Reservoir, which is located up American Fork Canyon, is my personal favorite as one of the most beautiful locations in Utah. Up there, you'll have the opportunity to fish for trout only, and most of them are small, but it should be fun. It will likely be crowded on Saturday, but again, during the week, it's a great place to go. If you watch the hillsides in the morning and evening, you may see deer and elk in that canyon as well. Toward the bottom of the canyon, you can sometimes see mountain goats too.

Good luck wherever you end up!

Any info on Fish lake and around that area? That's probably where we will be in the middle of the week.

If not we will just wait till the weekend and try one of the few spots mentioned here already.

along with a non resident fishing license, some of the places mentioned may charge a day use entrance fee. I know Utah Lake does because it is a State Park.

if you don't mind about a 1 mile moderate hike there's a place less than 30 minutes from salt lake in the sandy area called lower bell canyon reservoir, you have to hike to it and it's beautiful once you get there, however I will add that I have never actually caught anything out of there but always enjoyed the scenery lol[fishin]

If you are going to be in the Fish Lake area there are lots of opportunities and beautiful scenery. You have Fish Lake itself as mentioned above. There are several small streams around that Ares that are fun, seven mile, um creek, and the Fremont. You also have Boulder Mountain to the south of there, lots of high mountain lakes and some of the most beautiful scenery in Utah. Lower Bowns on the Boulders has been fishing really well. Good Luck!!!
