Scouts at strawberry

So I am taking a group of scouts to strawberry next week. We are going after the crawdads and some trout from the shore. So I have a few questions.

I have always gone over to the Soldier creek side on the dam for crawdads and then just fished from the bank. So question #1 how is the fishing there right now? Anyone been up lately. I have not ever been up there this early (not counting ice fishing). I just want to give the boys a good experience. Is there another place on the strawberry side where we can fish from the bank and go after crawdads too?

Question #2. Where can we camp that won't bother everyone else. 10 scouts has the ability to get loud. I have camped several times across the road from muddy, dispersed camping (free), but that is a little far from the soldier creek side of things. Is there a place where I can camp over by the soldier creek side besides going to the aspen campground? Like I said, with our budget free is always best.

And finally, question #3. In the winter on the ice I know what to use to have a great time. But the only success I have had from the bank is later on in the summer with garlic powerbait. Is there something else I should try this time of year?

Thank you ahead of time for your help. I am trying to instill with these guys a love for fishing and also teach them proper technique and etiquette. Their other scout leaders are not much of fishermen but the boys were so excited to watch me pull a dinky bow from a river during our last camp out that I thought it was time to show them how to enjoy the berry.

I have seen a lot of guys fishing the areas west of the dam & west of Aspen Grove. Not sure how they are doing? I am sure if it was poor fishing, there would not be so many fishing it.

The problem you run into is that west & south of the dam and Aspen Grove is either private ground or tribal lands - so you would need to be careful. In addition, all of the land east of the east side road is all private.

I have seen folks craw dadding (?) near the first rest room on the east side road & near the southern restroom inside the SC campground.

Never been to Strawberry, but I have brought Scouts fishing other places. Most success I've had is teaching and using two simple setups: 1) spinners; and 2) fly and bubble.

I taken the scouts to the Aspen campground several times. Its usually not real crowded so you aren't bothering many people. Its nice having bathrooms and water for your crayfish boil. The scouts can walk down to the water and catch tons of crayfish in a short time. Fishing is just okay there.

I usually don't go til August so fishing might be better there because there won't be the weeds in the shallows you get in later summer. However, crayfishing in the weeds is on fire. I've never tried catching them this early. Let me know how it goes.
