I picked this up at a garage sale today. I thought you guys might like checking it out. Could you imagine fighting a fish with this thing.
Its a Hurd super caster with walnut handles built in 1945 and 1946. I understand if this thread is moved I did not know where else to post it
Thanks Tom

Nice antique. Interesting how the handle is built into the reel.

I had to laugh out loud, but it really is very cool. Must be stainless to not be all rusty. Is there supposed to be a rod on it, or is it designed for the line to just go through the front?

Albino trout The walnut handle is attached with stainless steel screws I added a few more photos. Its quite interesting how the push button drag works. Unfortunately the pole was not included from my research it had a stainless steel insert with 3 eyelets on a 48" fiberglass blank

If the reel still is in working condition, you could probay find a modern blank to fit.

You spelled it correctly. I was going to observe that lots of people use the word "unique" when they mean "unusual" and they are not the same at all.
In fact, since there do seem to be collectable numbers of surviving Hurd reels out there, yours is NOT unique. It is certainly unusual, and even rare, but to say it is unique would mean it is the only one in existence. And it's not.

That's really cool. I'd love to put a rod on it and catch a 30lb. laker with it!

Jim I would love video tape you catching a laker on this reel. It's crazy how smooth the reel is and everything works on it

Very cool. I love the walnut handle. The link Rocky put up is great too. I hope you got a great deal on it. Are you going to use it, or just admire it? If it were mine, I would like to try it just once to say I caught a fish with it, but knowing me, I would probably break it or drop it in the lake.[laugh]

I picked the reel up for 5 bucks. And yes I'm going to try to catch at least one fish on it and then add it to my collection

Hey I have one of those rods too. A neighbor of mine gave it to me years ago because he knew I collected old fishing gear. I still have the rod and case it came in but I wouldn't advise trying to cast any light weight lures with it. The rod is steel and takes a half ounce lure to even bend it on a cast. My reel doesn't have the checkering on the handle like yours (yours must be the deluxe model) Some day I'm going to try and catch a fish with it just to say I did. In the photos you'll notice the metal rod and also how small this rod/reel is. It measures 60" from tip to tip
