boniville white fish
#1
I called and talked with the biologist over brear lake and asked him about catching the boniville white fish in the summer. He aid he has been trying for years with NO luck. Really got me down.
There has got to be a way to catch them in the summer months. The biologist said the spring gill nets showed lots of whites and they were full of bloodworms, so they eat.
Has anyone got any ideas, what might work in the summer . or has caught them in the summer. I think the key here is bloodworms , they eat them so there s got to be a way to match the hatch and catch afew this summer.
Any idas or advise is welcomed . Thanks Joe.
Good fishing to all.

All of us up here seem to pick a few up in the summer, but that is incidental to the cutts and macks that we are really fishing for. We just never really seem to target whitefish during the summer for some reason.
I CAN tell you that I've only ever caught one trolling. All the others that I've caught in the summer months have been on a bait tipped 1/2 ounce or bigger jig fished right on the bottom, and every one of them has been a pretty big whitefish.

About 15 years ago I was fishing and camping at Cisco beach with with my brother and his wife and we caught a few just drowning worms in about 40 feet of water. The cutts were being picky and we tried the worms hoping it would finesse them off the bottom. It didn't really work, but if I recall, 3 or 4 whitefish made the mistake of taking our bait, those were the first ones that I ever caught on this lake.

When there is ice, we catch them all the time using worms on a small jig fished in and around the weed beds, so if I were to specifically target whitefish in the summer I think I would just send a 1/4 ounce jig tipped with a worm down about 35 feet around the various weed beds that are in the lake and I would imagine that there would be a few to be found.

I've been out with the biologist doing gill net sampling before and we found tons of whitefish at pretty much all depths from 20-90 feet.....didn't seem to be a shortage of them anywhere. Fish gotta eat, so I would definitely try it if you got a hankering to....worst case scenario is you catch other species.

Hope that helps a little.
