Flaming Gorge Koke Help...

My family is headed to the Utah side of the Gorge this weekend, I'm looking for tips as to where we can catch some Kokanee. I've fished them on the Wyoming side and had tons of success, I just don't know where they congregate? By the dam? Mustang? Gold point? Sheep Creek? Also, best spots for big rainbow? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!!!

we will be up there this weekend also, Not really sure where we will be fishing on UT either, were in the same boat a you, Usually hit buckboard and do well.

I was planning on launching at lucerene (where we will be camping) and shooting up to Anvil but hear it has been slow there and pipeline is only giving up 6-8" ones.

late season(around labor day) ive usually fished the redcliffs in sheepcreek bay & do good so I might give that spot a try.

ill be fishing in a 32' Bayliner cabin cruiser, fallowed by a small 19' red maxum boat, If you see me say Hello.

I have not been to the Utah side yet this year so take it with a grain of salt... I have done best just down canyon from Hide Out camp ground and around Jarvies. These two areas have treated me better than sheep creek but I have caught kokes there too.. Lots of rainbows around sheep creek just not many kokes. Wish I could give you more direction but I have not been down there yet this year but if you know how to catch them up north you will find them down in the canyon too

I was kind of thinkin around Jarvies as well, thanks for the info, the Utah side is just kind of a bugger when it comes to Kokanee fishing from what I have heard.

I like the bigger fish of wyo but the canyon is awesome to fish in.. Good luck I hope you knock em dead.. Let us know how you do. I am going to Hide Out over the 24th of july and hoping to hit em hard down in the canyon

Horse Shoe Canyon is where it is. Its on the west wall you will see it if you watch for it.. I think there is a ladder to get you up on the rock face too..

The swing I am thinking of might be in Kingfisher the next poster below this mentioned king fisher and that made me double think my memory....

how big were they and what colors were producing? along with time you was fishing?

also, which swing? isn't there one in horseshoe canyon and one the next canyon down (kingfisher maybe?)

The rope swing is on Kingfisher island. The water is high enough that you can climb pretty easy.

Yes to the depths: 40-60'. We got into them pretty heavy at 30-40' two weeks ago. As the water warms, they are diving deeper.

The Kingfisher area was okay, but we saw the best success just east of the Mustang ramp. We were fishing in about 80' of water, 40' down.

We trolled at 1.5 using a RMT fusion dodger with pink squids. The squids are placed less than 12" from the dodger. The largest we pulled out of Mustang was just under 4#. We had a handful in the mid-upper two pound range.

We had a smaller Koke we tried to release, but before it fully regained life an Osprey took it to the Gates of Heaven. That was pretty cool to see.

geez it sounds like all the good fishing is far away in either direction from lucerne.

Yeah they can get annoying catching them while targeting Koke's

Most of the macs were under 3 pounds. We landed one 26" fatty.
I've noticed that more macs were caught during erratic boat maneuvers and S turns. Having experience trolling for macs I've learned they will follow your lure for awhile before striking. Once you change your pattern they move in to bite.

I love fishing for macs, but if I'm targeting kokes I don't want an endless chain of pups keeping the kokes away from my squid.

looking like were going to head deep into the north and fish around lowe canyon, then I can hit a few spots on the way back looking for macks, ive made some heavy metal 6 blade pop gear I want to try out and see if I can get into a decent mack finally
