Berry shore fishing help

I am taking my scouts up to strawberry this Saturday to earn there fishing/fly fishing merit badge. Last time we fished by Aspen grove but we only got 2 between the 6 of them. does any one have tips or a good spot to shore fish? They have to catch 2 kinds of fish in order to get the badge so I know they have cuts, rainbows and kokanee but can you catch them from the shore?

You can do really well fishing from Shore most places on the lake. If you like Aspen Grove, one of the places that seems to hold a ton of fish is right near the marina. You could also "fish" for crawfish. Technically, it's a fish right? They are super easy to catch this time of year. Just take a drumstick, tie it to a string and let it sit in the water for 5 minutes. then gently pull it out and scoop up whatever is holding on with a dip net. butterfly nets work great! Try for them on the rocky shorelines.

On the road off the highway when you are headed to Aspen grove, there is a turnout about a mile from the main highway. If you take that road and go down to the day use area, you can fish from shore there too. There are a lot of fish in there and if you're not catching them, move. Remember that the closer you stay to the road, the fewer fish you will find. Powerbait with splitshot about 18 - 24" above your hook will do the trick for rainbows.

Cutthroats are a little tougher to catch on bait, but you will catch them occasionally. I'd try casting a tube jig and a work, or spinners and spoons. With the recent heat wave, you're going to want to get somewhere that you can get into deeper water. My best guess is that they won't be cruising the shoreline anymore.

Finally, early and late will be your friend. Middle of the day, will be slow. Good luck!
