Logan 1st dam, Any Ice fishing?
#1
Has anyone hard water fished 1st Dam? I went out there today, and saw that all is frozen over except for the inlet. I was alone and did not want to walk out on the ice by myself. I did see some footprints not too far from shore. Ice over moving water worries me a little. Any suggestions (other than 'be careful')?

I wouldn't do it. I lived in Logan for 7 years and never saw anyone do it. Besides, you have Hyrum, Porcupine, Newton, and maybe even Bear Lake to ice fish. There is nothing better than a big old brown out of Porcupine.

I've never fished a river in my life and you can't prove otherwise. [Tongue]

I CAN'T SPEAK FOR THIS YEAR BUT I HAVE FISHED 1ST DAM ALMOST EVERY YEAR FOR THE LAST 5 YEARS. THE FISHING CAN BE EXCELLENT DOWN BY THE DAM. tHE SAFEST WAY TO ACCESS FIRST DAM IS TO WALK AROUND AND COME ON THE ICE FROM THE EAST SIDE. LAST YEAR IT DID NOT GET COLD ENOUGH. THIRD DAM IS EVEN MORE FUN BY THE DAM NEXT TO THE ROAD. THE ICE GENERALLY THINS VERY QUICKLY BY OPEN WATER. I WOULD RECOMMEND DRILLING HOLES EVERY 5-10 FEET. tHE LAST TIME I FISHED THIRD DAM WE WERE IN ABOUT 10 FEET OF WATER. THE OPEN WATER WAS ONLY ABOUT 10 FEET AWAY BUT THE ICE WAS 5 INCHES THICK. THE WATER WAS CRYSTAL CLEAR AND WE SAT IN THE HUT LOOKING DOWN THE HOLE WATCHING SOME OF THE MONSTERS SWIMMING BY. WE EVEN HAD A MUSKRAT COME OUT OF THE HOLE. WE CAUGHT A LOT OF FISH, BUT ALL OF THE BIG FISH JUST KEPT ON SWIMMING.

hashbaz,

I wouldn't do it. If you go through the ice and get in some current, that could be all she wrote. It is not worth it.

Eighteen years ago I had a bad experience with that ice on the third dam on the Logan. I was fishing for browns on that very ice shelf along the road that was mentioned earlier. I was only ten feet from the bank when the ice shelf broke off and flipped up on it's side. I was tossed into the river and the air temp was below zero. The water wasn't that deep, but I was up to my knees in that sticky silt on the bottom. I could not move to save myself. Just about bought the farm right there next to the highway with cars zinging by oblivious to my plight. After about 15 minutes of fighting it I finally had to lay down in the water face first and did a kind of half swim half crawl. I made it but was hypothermic. I'll never forget that one.

I don't think I'll be trying Kayote's trick up by third dam, But 1st is completely froze over, and the thing I like the best about it is I can walk out of my apartment and be drilling a hole in about 5 minutes.
