Trolled the Pig

Hit the pig Wednesday with the family and it was a tough slog for us. I hoped for fast action but was disappointed. We did finally figure out where they were but only boated seven and one was too small to keep even with my loose standards for that pond. Ramp is sure steep, I'm glad I had help to get out of there and watch the big rock just a bit under the water level if you don't have your motor up it could ruin your day.

Anyway it was sure fun to finally get back out on the pond, but fish early it gets hot fast, and that's temperature not action. We caught fish on four or five different setups so the lures didn't matter, but the depth sure did. We were running 160' on leadcore trolling 1.2 to 1.4 mph and 42' deep on the riggers. When we were 5 - 10' higher we didn't have a single hit. So they are deeper than I usually find the fish up there feeding and if you don't get it close to them they aren't going to pay any attention to your offering. Cooked the fish up that night and wow!!! I forget how much I enjoy Kokes and that was barbecued not smoked that makes them even better. Anyway company is gone so maybe I'll get back after the catfish now. Later J

Was good to get out been going into withdrawals lately. Went after cats this morning but nothing to bump a score. My best was 22.5" today but I was only out for an hour and a half. I think I need to find a new spot only cookie cutters there this year. Last year I found some 27's there this time of year but nothing good lately. Have you been out? I've been so busy I haven't kept up with the forum so I don't know how everyone has been doing. Good luck. J

I need to learn where they go because I used to think deep water, but I haven't been finding them there either. Guess I need to spend some time and see what happens. Later J

I fish the twylight zones this time of year, seems to be better fishing besides its the only time I can get out. But September is always fun once the cool hits. Later J

Zayne and I went up Saturday and done the jigging thing. He caught one just shortly after getting on the water and we had a couple other hits then nothing. It was a first for him so that was good. That was my first time targeting Kokes, have a lot more to learn.

That's pretty good if you can find them to jig them. It's really hard to stay on top of the fish to jig for them, thats why I troll to help get me on the fish more often. Sounds like you did well for a first attempt and if you don't have a way to get your offering down deep you did the best thing possible. Good job. Later J

I been struggling too. Been 5 times since late June and averaging around 1 fish in the net per hour. Lost a few at the net that never should have happened, but you have to let your inexperienced friends reel/net a few.

Last year we averaged closer to 1 in the net per 10 min. Feels like the population is way down, but I have pulled my gear through some pretty impressive swarms on the finder. Leaves me shaking my head....

Durn near wore out the latches on my tackle box.

Yup you sure have to crank those Kokes right in. Everytime I let them start to fight they throw the hook on me. Had lots of inexperienced early releases in our boat last trip but they just don't believe you until they lose a couple fish and start to wonder why you catch them and they can't. Hard to keep the line tight from end to end of the fight but you sure have to with Kokes. Later J
